Over the Top: On Some Dynamics of the Visual and Verbal Sublime
Ian Balfour, a professor of English and of Social and Political Thought at York University, is co-curating an exhibition at Tate Britain on the work of William Hazlitt and finishing a book on the sublime. His talk scrutinizes the theory and practice of the sublime in the long eighteenth century and, to a lesser extent, in the post-WWW period, attending to some of wildly divergent claims for the visual and the verbal sublime.
