WSO: Symphonie Fantastique

Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique is without doubt a turning point in the history of orchestral music. Written only four years after Beethoven's death, it's the first programmatic symphony of the Romantic period and tells the story of a young artist who is madly in love but unfortunately his desires are not reciprocated. Berlioz's cyclic use of the music motifs along with a large and lush orchestration makes him a very distinctive composer of the early 19th century. Alexander Schimpf, a winner of last year's Cleveland International Piano Competition will perform the intricate and fabulous Concerto No. 4 which is considered to be one of the central works of the piano concerto literature. In addition, the Williamsport Symphony Youth Orchestra will join us for a "side by side" treat that will showcase their talent.
