Musical Repercussions of the Civil War
Kansas State University music professor Craig Parker discusses changes in America’s musical heritage as a result of our nation’s most divisive conflict.
His presentation will focus on the song “Dixie” and its immense popularity during Reconstruction and later in the South, largely through its performances by John Philip Sousa. He'll also discuss his own diverse - and sometimes controversy-inciting - experiences with the tune from the 1960s to the present.
