Senior Wednesday: Mattie Ross and Other Women of Grit: The Exception or the Rule in Literature of the American Frontier?

Wednesday, Oct 9, 2013 1:30p to 2:30p

This talk will explore the presence of strong female characters like Mattie Ross in novels like "True Grit." How common were such representations, and did they match up to the real experience of women? Or did they ignore the material conditions of real women's lives? This talk will also explore what is meant by the west. Mattie's west, for example, is much different from the west of Indian territory, and the west created by Portis is different from the west that actually existed. (60 minutes)
