Garrett Peck - The Smithsonian Castle And The Seneca Quarry
Feb 24 2013 6:00 pm
Can you name the stone used to construct the Smithsonian Castle? In his companion volume to The Potomac River: A History and Guide, Peck, a D.C.-area historian, tells us that the Castle is built of red sandstone from the Seneca Quarry, twenty miles outside the District. There was more to the quarry than stone, however, and Peck chronicles the dramatic lives and times of those who owned and worked on the site.
