We went here last night because they'd advertised a salsa night called Salsa Noche Calena. It said doors open at 8--we arrived at 10 and asked the door guy selling tix ($10 a head) if we could go and have a look in the dance hall before we bought a ticket. He was very obnoxious and said that we couldn't even step foot in the area leading up to the hall, going so far as to draw an imaginary line on the floor and saying, "If you want to cross this line you have to pay." As if it were some exclusive club! For those of you who haven't been here, it is totally NOT.
That was the first warning sign (we should have left at that point) but we figured we were there so we paid and went into the hall only to be disappointed by the fact that there was hardly anyone in there. It's a big hall and with only about 30 people in there, it felt empty and cold. We waited about 5 minutes for another friend to arrive (who told us she got the same treatment from the door guy) and she didn't want to stay, which meant the rest of us were obliged to leave too. We asked for a refund (literally we were in there for about 5 min), and the door guy told us "absolutely no refunds" in a very obnoxious way.
More unprofessionalism--when we had to go looking for him to ask for the refund, we found him smoking right in the entrance way of the building (shows you how dead it is when the doorman can take a long smoke break away from the ticket table). All in all a very unpleasant experience, mostly due to the jerk at the door. We ended up going to the Polish Community Centre on Fraser and 25th (also a Latin/salsa night) and it was hopping--so many more people and a much better vibe.
Judging from the other review here, I'm sure the Hungarian centre hosts a lot of nice events, but avoid their Friday night salsa events--the one we went to was a big fat dud.
