The Race to the South Pole: Ten Lessons for Project Managers - February 21, 2013
Â
About this Session :
On 14 December 1911, four men led by Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole. Thirty-five days later, Robert F. Scott and four others followed. Amundsen had won the race to the pole. Amundsen’s party returned to base on 26 January 1912. Scott’s party perished. As historical drama, why this happened is interest-ing enough. But to project managers, the story is fascinating. We’ll use the history… Show more of this event to explore ten important lessons about manag-ing complex projects. From this story we can learn ten lessons in project man-agement, including lessons about leadership, planning, scope creep, risk man-agement, improvisation, discipline, organizational politics, team dynamics, tech-nology management, and simplicity. Each of these principles will be illustrated with a story from the Race to the South Pole, comparing the approaches used by the two teams. The result is a lively, interesting program that deals with these ten topics in a memorable way.
