The only thing as good as the sandwiches here are the people who work behind the counter. They're always cheerful and they serve really tasty sandwiches. The Slickster (cranberry and turkey) and The Tony Soprano (big italian sub) are both highly recommended. Literally the only downside is that their chicken often leaves something to be desired.
A good place to grab a drink or a bite to eat. The atmosphere in this place can't be beat for authentic Irish Pub-iness. The food was decent, but the beer is good. I'm definitely going back here for St Patrick's day.
Zeitgeist is a weird place. You enter through a door with a very masculine playboy bunny into the main bar. There aren't any tables in the bar because almost every square inch of floor is taken up by full kegs of beer. In the back room is a pinball machine and a pool table, and the ordering window for food. Everyone hangs out outside in the big backyard, where there are porta potties, picnic tables and hooks on the wall to hang bikes. I've eaten the burgers here 3 times, and I'm still not sure if they're so good because I've always been drinking heavily or if they're actually good food. Either way, I keep going back for them. During warmer months the backyard gets totally packed, but when it's cold and rainy, most of the tables will still be full. If you want a real dive bar experience in the Mission with good beer and great burgers, Zeitgeist is definitely what you're looking for.
The lunch buffet at Masala Art is only $10, and definitely worth it. It's all you can eat, really delicious and a great deal!
The food at Sweet Basil is good, but the pizzas are great. Order extra and eat it for lunch the next day, they're still really tasty when cold.
I went here for lunch and enjoyed it. The service was excellent, the food was very tasty and the prices weren't exorbitant. It was a little fancier than I expected, but I'd definitely go back.
If you're looking for a great burger on Valencia, you have to try the Black and Blue burger at The Phoenix. The beer selection here is great, the atmosphere is funky and hip and the food is great.
Some friends of mine and I were looking for Indian food in the mission after it turned out our first choice was closed. We wandered up Valencia until we found Maharaja and decided to give it a shot. It wasn't that great. The service was poor, the food tasted like something microwaved and the rice was kind of dry. On top of that, it was all pretty expensive. There are better choices for Indian food in the Mission.
My friends and I go here all the time. Their curries aren't the best, but the noodle dishes are really great. Watch out for the spicy food, it can be VERY spicy.
I saw Matt Nathanson perform a few years ago out in Boston and had a really good time. He's got a great voice and is really funny to boot. His banter with the audience and the way he got people singing along were both a lot of fun. One of the few performers I prefer live to recorded.
The Warfield is the best venue I've seen a show at so far in San Francisco. The building itself is really cool, an old converted theater, with a lot of the original detail work intact. I liked that I could stand out in the lobby with friends at the bar while we waited for the opening act to finish before going in and finding our seats in the balcony. If you're more into General Admission, they've got a big open floor on the ground level for you too. The acoustics and sightlines were all very good, and I really enjoyed the show I saw. The only downside is the sketchy neighborhood it's in.
Foreign Cinema is an amazing restaurant tucked away where you'd least expect it. The food and wine are great and the atmosphere is better. With very cool converted-warehouse decor and foreign films playing on the wall of the courtyard, it's a really nice place to enjoy an excellent meal. The oyster bar is great, as is the rest of the food. Too pricey to enjoy all the time, but a good place for a special location. I'm told their brunch menu is good too, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.
If you're looking for mexican food in the mission that's not too greasy but is really tasty, check out Papalote. There are also great vegetarian options if you're not into meat.
The blue fin toro here is to die for. I've never had fish that melted in my mouth the same way. It's pricey, to be sure, but it's definitely worth it. The rest of the food was also very good, and reasonably priced for such quality sushi. The service was also good. We didn't make a reservation, so the waitress took my cell phone number and called me when our table was ready, which is a really nice feature. The house Sake was decent, and the miso soup was pretty good too. Overall I really really liked this place. I'll definitely be going back for more of the blue fin toro.
I went here for a friend's birthday dinner. The food was very good, the wine selection was decent and the service was ok. The place did seem a little over priced though for what we got. I feel like I've had food of equivalent quality at other places in the mission for less money. The salad my friend got was especially underwhelming. I may go back, but it's not high on my list.
Atlas is a great little cafe, especially if you're looking for someplace to work. The food is tasty and organic, and the menu has a lot of vegetarian options. There's free wifi (just ask the cashier), free magazines and usually a lot of people working on laptops. The outdoor patio is a nice place during the warmer months. The only downside is that they're a little expensive and the staff can be a bit... surly. The food is good enough to keep me going back though.
Mika is a great performer and the show was really well done. More than once I turned to my friends and went "Holy poop this is insane". The encore was particularly amazing. Its like a circus meets a concert meets a cartoon. Overall a really fun show.
The food was amazing and original, the wine was fantastic and the service was great. Plus it was less expensive than I expected. It was a little noisy, but not bad. The inside-out-burger is unbelievably good. Definitely recommended.
A fantastically talented group of performers. Their music is still great 13 years after their biggest releases.
Until he got unfairly knocked out of the primaries.
Honestly, I've been a little disappointed with Eddie Izzard since "Dress to Kill". That still ranks as probably the best stand up act I've ever seen, but his work since then hasn't been nearly as good.
I blame the Spice Girls for everything that's wrong with music today. Style over substance, flash over depth and inane cliches instead of meaningful lyrics. But their music is catchy, so they get 2 stars.
A very talented young actor who prefers deep, unusual and interesting independent roles. Doesn't so much play a role as allow a character to play him. Impressive to watch and always enjoyable.
If you like Film Noir you will love this movie. Imagine a traditional film noir but set in a suburban high school, mix in a subtle sense of humor and and incredible young actors and you've got Brick. I highly recommend this film.
The Independent is a great venue for live music. The bar is well placed, the sound quality is the best I've heard in the area, it doesn't get too hot and the space isn't claustrophobia inducing. If you're looking for a great place to see music, this is it.
These guys put on an amazing, high energy show. A friend of mine convinced me to see them in concert a few weeks ago. I knew and liked their music but I'm not a big fan of live music in general. I don't like the waiting around, standing for hours on end and the ringing in my ears the next day. But these guys were more than worth it. Their songs are hilarious and catchy and they're a ton of fun to watch perform. You should definitely try to catch them the next time they're in your town.
