The story feels a little over the top, which is probably want the director wants anyway. The visual and story telling is what make it engaging.
Very simple and predictable story. But what acting Mickey Rourke pulled off. The film and actors really deserve an award or two.
Very funny, very dark. The situations are highly improbable. Using a legion of "drama" actors for "comedy" created an interesting comic tension. George Clooney is easily the funniest character in the movie. Kudos for Coen brothers to bring out his funny side. The acting for everybody is spot on, even though many characters are one-dimensional caricatures.
The Russians?
My wife and I tried it out for the first time for my birthday on a Wednesday.
We're very impressed with this relatively new place. The photo doesn't do justice to the interior. It is tasteful and cozy at the same time. The food was the real high light of the night. Peruvian food has a lot of Japanese influence. Some dishes are decidedly organic fusion of tapa and sushi! The presentation is an artful mixto of the west and the east as well. The price is very reasonable for the quality of the dining experience.
There is a little gaffe in the service that night. The sole waiter (who blamed the lateness of a busboy that made him scramble) delivered not one but three wrong appetizers (since we're new to the place and we didn't notice it either.), which would mean they're free of charge if we didn't like them. They're all delicious! Being a magnanimous guy as I am, I pointed out truthfully that we even liked one of the dishes better than the similar one we ordered. In the end, they only charged us for one of the extra dishes.
We're stuffed and smiling leaving the restaurant, because of the additional 3 for 1 dishes. $25 gift certificate for $2 didn't hurt either :)
It's an enlightened observation on relationships of a few smart but unenlightened human beings. I'd prefer this to his other more glib and babbling routines. There are more than a few chuckles here and there.
Indeed, it's better than the original. The surreal visual is the most impressive part of the movie. Nice allusion/reenactment of Princess Mononoke's forest's god, whose death is one of the most magical experiences I've ever encountered.
Highly recommended.
The loom should better making sweaters and fruits rather than tampering with fate. The premise is so underwhelming, it nearly ruin the movie for me. However, the story telling, fluid CGI and the cinematography makes it worth the money.
Amazing better than real CGI modeling effort. Very cute first half with the end/high point being the roach watching WALL-E clinging to the spaceship leaving the earth, where my 4.5 year old cried, as the roach will be all alone on the earth, without a friend. Unfortunately the movie then degenerates into a typical dogmatic and simplistic moral tale. I expected much better story telling than the second half offered.
I liked Ratatouille better as well.
My daughter loved WALL-E though, she wants to see it again.
Maybe the hype got me. I don't think the main characters are really funny. Peter's step brother, and particularly, the brit singer with cockney accent are hilarious enough to save the day. I thought the brit was just obnoxious in the trailer. But unlike Dane Cook, he's actually funny as well.
All superhero movies have those "yeah right" moments. For this one, they're kept to a minimum, because both characters and technologies are developed convincingly enough along with the story. The attention to details is astounding.
BTW, relax and enjoy the credits...
@AnDroo. The sparrow always talked in third person until the last moment when she said, "*I* thank you...". Instead of being moved, I shook my head thinking that it's too subtle (and forced at the same time) for the style of the film.
Wonderful blend of Malay, Indian and southern Chinese food. Unique art decor (some hand-made by the owner). Small place. Sometimes crowded.
The door lady told us that it's a huge turn out for a SIG (special interest group) meeting. Most people attended are not forum members.
There are many good questions raised by the audience. Doug handled them with confidence and clarity.
I think it's markedly better than the better known Darda Seafood for northern Chinese muslim cuisine. Good food for cheap. Usually crowded, so try off-peak days/hours.
Signature dishes:
Chinese hamburger(牛肉馅饼)is a must try regardless your artery conditions, speaking as someone who doesn't usually eat beef or meat in general; Sesame bread with green union is one of the best I've tried; Lamb skewers are sizzling, juicy and exploded with flavors; And you can count on any dishes with flour/dough/noodles being superb as well.
by almost everyone I know. When we could not make up our mind where to eat, someone would suggest Darda.
The food is dependably good and price is usually cheap, except for live fish, which is usually well cooked. But still a rip off as in any restaurants, unless for suckers who can't cook :) Steamed live fish is one of the easiest dishes to prepare. Don't bother to look for ambiance and such bourgeois indulgence unless you're into dingy carpet and blown up Mecca panorama.
Inspired animation and story-telling, a must see for Dr. Seuss' fans.
I still prefer Ratatouille though :)
It's very amusing to see a little kid with better communication skills than those name/word dropping bourgeoisie adults.
Top notch acting and story-telling. I'd recommend to my daughter, as it encourages her to fall for rich guys with a platinum card to save the day, instead of starving artists. Oh, if you want to be a career woman who's romantic at heart, the chance of finding/keeping your prince charming is zilch unless you count fairly tales, literally.
Bravo, Disney for the enchanting messages. I smell Oscars.
it tanked into a Indiana Jones wannabe and failed miserably. Yeah, the fake geek side-kick is highly annoying.
Jaw dropping techniques (best tremolo in the world); dynamic interpretations (making great progress in nuance and subtlety as well).
Impressed.
Perfect demo of the uncanny valley curve. I found movement of humans in the movie "funny". Non-human creatures were awesome though, so were the flying sequences.
if there is anything puzzling to you after watch this film, something is lost in translation.
Ang Lee cracked a tough nut.
This is a fantastical movie. The cliches won't make you wince, instead, they make you smile, LOL and guffaw. And the magics are, well, magical. This is the Princess Bride of the new generation. Yes. It's that good.
