WARNING: This review contains spoilers.
At the age of six I was glued to the TV when an episode of a new show Star Trek aired. The first episode. 29 seasons, ten movies, umpteen books, short stories, novellas, and articles later, let's just throw it all in the dump and start over. Cause goodness knows we can do it better than the guy who created it all, right? I mean we weren't happy screwing things up with ENTERPRISE and a captain who should have been on the Good Ship Lollipop. They lost me when someone couldn't even be bothered to leave a post-it note about the borg coming in 200 years. Archer tackles the Xindi and suddenly everything in the future is named after crew, pets and Archer is the first captain of the Enterprise.
Now comes the movie. Here's a spoiler...Vulcan's blown up, everything is changed sideways, and the only real bad guy is Leonard Nimoy.
Now to the rating. The acting was supberb. Sylar and Spock are so much alike it is scary and a little twisted. The kissy-face with Uhura was just dumb, though. Pine and everyone else did a great job, up to and including the computer not understanding Checkov. (Guess Gary Mitchell got a day job?) Unfortunately, Nero's part could have been played by the old card-board cutout of the Hulk from the movie theater just as well.
Effects were great - too great. Lost all continuity on the Enterprise and the way it looked even before the time-line went whooie.
And whoever wrote the script should go back to doing the logos for matchbook covers.
With a nearly limitless set of possibilities for story-lines, how in the world did anyone manage to screw it up so completely? With this cast (less Bana) this SHOULD have been the best Star Trek movie ever.
It does pave the way for the studio to do whatever it wants in the new alternate time-line. I guess they weren't happy with a nearly infinite set of possibilities. Nope, got to smash everything and redo what they've already done cause they do not have an original brain cell amongst them. Okay, I'm tired of ranting now - won't do any good. Lucky I can't time-travel.
