I love to go to this event every year--I feel joyful among the crowd, and I get a real heart-healthy workout. The music and musicians are exciting and beautiful.
I saw these guys a few years ago in Pacifica--it was a magical evening. I really felt I had been transported to a village in Africa and found a new appreciation for the beauty of the cultures.
Babá Ken & Kotoja
"The Bay Area's Leader in Afrobeat"
--Larry Kelp, East Bay Express
Babá Ken was first seen in the U.S. with King Sunny Ade's world-touring African Beats.
Babá Ken Okulolo founded the Bay Area’s first and longest-lasting Afrobeat band, Kotoja, in 1986. A chance discovery of their performance in Golden Gate Park by Dan Storper was so exciting that it inspired him to found the Putumayo World Music label, and make their album the label’s first release, “Super Sawale.”
Five times voted Nigeria's best bassist by the Nigerian Assocation of Journalists, Babá Ken grew up playing with historic Nigerian artists such as Fela Kuti and highlife master Victor Olaiya, before leading his own bands and settling in the Bay Area.
