We were looking for a quiet place to have dinner late Thursday eve. We'd had a light lunch at Milano's before, so we decided to try their dinner fare.
My boyfriend ordered the veal chop, and I had the grilled salmon. Both were delicious. The sauces celebrated garlic which agreed with our expectations!
"Holy amazing artwork, Batman!" It has been a very long time since my first reaction to an art display elicited a phrase by Robin!
The Grand Opening night at the Alphonse Berber Gallery on Bancroft in Berkeley was a truly memorable event. As we entered the spacious main room, we were drawn by the huge Margolin "wave" kinetic sculpture. Wow! We were told it took him many months to put it together. The walls sported numerous bird of prey photos by J. Davis, followed by a fun line of silk printed ties.
The upper level was cleverly designed by using what looks like dark wood clothing cabinets to display paintings and wearable art. The painted sneakers are great, as are the gorgeous laser cut bamboo jewelery pieces. A blue-lit room housed a display by Emily Jan that used pig-gut (yes that's right), macrame and wood to create an owl and nest hanging from the ceiling.
the light sculpture in the back room was fascinating, as are the graphite landscapes by Margiditch.
The Gallery teamed with people all expressing the same opinion; it's been a long time since Berkeley had a Gallery that promoted high-end innovative art.
The owners were gracious and attentive, impassioned with their love of art and elated by the incredible turnout, confirming their hunch that Berkeley had indeed been thirsting for a Gallery to call their own.
It's been a long time since I walked into a gallery and had a phrase from a Batman TV episode be the first to burst into my mind..."Holy Amazing Works of Art!"
Last night's Grand Opening of the Alphonse Berber Gallery was an affair to remember for those of us longing for Berkeley to recapture its past investment and promotion of high-end innovative Art.
Margolin's kinetic sculptures on the main floor drew us in and awakened our curiosity about the principles of motion. Once able to pull away, up the stairs one found a feast of creativity.. from painted sneakers, nervous system's latex and silver jewelry, felt zippered totes, oil on wood collages, and charred wood sculptures, to incredibly beautiful pig gut, wood and yarn creations.
Further back a room flaunting amazing graphite landscapes and a separate light sculpture presentation which spilled on three walls.
The owners were gracious and attentive, impassioned with their love of art and elated by the turnout, confirming their hunch that Berkeley was indeed thirsting for a Gallery to call their own.
