nom nom nom nom (sound of me eating this delicious food)
There are a lot of fanboys out there who are really dropping trow on this movie. Picky complaints: no Black Freighter, no Squid, etc. A film is never going to be as detailed as a book. But the question is, does the film convey the same meaning, spirit, and tone of the original book?
The answer to that question is yes. I finished the book about a week before the film came out, and even watched some of the Motion Comics. The film really does a fantastic job of bringing the 2D book to life. I'm willing to bet money that most folks who felt the movie was too different from the book either didn't really read the book, or read it so long ago they don't remember the details correctly.
I was delighted by the movie and was smiling at all the details and darkness and humor. Rorshach is dead on. People who don't like the voice over apparently didn't realize its part of the original story and very important.
The film also helped me understand the relationship between The Comedian and Sally Jupiter better. There was definitely some perverse masochistic kink going on there.
My only real complaint about the film is the portrayal of Ozymandius. He is a skinny David Bowie White Duke type and it's obvious from the first time you see him that he is going to be the antagonist (he's not really a villain).
I wish they were truer to the story in portraying Ozymandius. He's really supposed to be a tall, buffed, blonde captain of industry, completely irresistible and beloved. Ozy's the Steve Job's of this world. He's got the Midas touch, every product he makes is innovative and instantly loved by the public. Every business decision is the correct one. "Smartest Man in the World" isn't a back-handed insult, it's the truth. This is my only real complaint.
Anyway, I can't wait for the DVD release. I hope it's six hours long with tons of commentary. Until then, it's back to the theater for me!
