Their last show in had the intimacy of the Orpheum and the energy of a show at Madison Sq Garden, Shoreline or any number of larger venues and festivals which KOL has played.
Good energy, great sound. Not much chatter or audience engagement from the band - just straight up hooks and grooves, with their unique raw and polished sound. Glad I caught them on their ascent; they are arguably big, but will only get bigger.
I take in my fair share live music and have been awed on occasion by super talented but obscure performers. I now officially have a new alltime favorite in Theresa Andersson. She has it all - a multi instrumentalist who has to be seen live to appreciate her version of 'mixing' & looping her own percussion, violin/mandolin/dobro and vocals to melt a glacier. The complete package she generates solar-level wattage. Engages her audience spellbindingly with her charm and pure enjoyment at being on stage. I have never smiled so much at a show.
sad to see this one go. after a 5 year run and some memorable bands they've packed up the starship and are off in search of the 13th galaxy
Fried pickles, poboys of all flava's - this small cleverly named joint offers uniquely southern, piscine, veggie and spicey Mission fare as funked as the clientelle and ambiance. Troll your best live bait, worm, or lures and see what you catch from an aquarium filled with exotic bites.
For its intimate size, the sound quality is amazing at the Independent. No obscured views, a balcony, plenty of floor space and a bar that is adequately staffed (no tiresome waits for your drinks). Only downsides I can think of: Parking can be a chore and the bathroom requires a trek wading through a crowd. (Tip: Great spot to gather before the show: Waziema - an Ethiopian spot across the street: http://www.zvents.com/san-francisco-ca/venues/show/15107-club-waziema )
Bring the whole family for a unique San Francsico experience - skating on the very field where legends of baseball play! No cleats required - they rent all the metal you need for your feet. Hot chocolate is served.
Hands down, Cowboy Mouth are one of the top 3 shows touring live today. You'll be hooked before the end of the first song, and jumping out of your mardi gras shoes. Come feel the adrenaline rush and you'll leave grinning for days afterward.
Drove from Woodland Hills recently to see an alt-country, folksy Austin favorite, Terri Hendrix. This is a treasure Warm intimate setting, owners were so darn friendly they treat you like house guests. There's open mike comedy in the front, yummy ice cream and access to some great performers.
Thanks once again to Kick Harcourt of KCRW for turning me onto another great sound. KCRW - my personal musical discovery genome (no offense Pandora).

Nine year old liked it, eleven year old was lukewarm and Dad toler-hated it. It is Disney schlock at its finest - complete with promotions of other Disney sitcom characters. The Rock portrays the cocky self-absorbed athlete with reckless vanity and cliched humor.
I am a fan of Arrested Development. This is a far cry from AD. The premise for this movie is so common - highschool kids obsessed with liquor, losers and leg; getting busted by cops, spit on by a bully, a fat kid, a nerd (who gets the girl!) - that it would take a herculean feat to rescue it from mediocrity. Unfortunately, it falls way flat of inspired comedy. Awkward does not equate to funny. Yes, I laughed some, I grinned, but I also found myself checking my email on my PDA, and my thoughts drifting outside the walls of an empty theater wondering where the radiologist is - this movie needs a barium enema, CAT-scan and EKG - in search of a of a funny bone.
Rocco's is an all-time 12 year SF favorite of mine. Food is delicious and large servings. Staff is real, and real friendly. Feels authentic inside warm, if a bit tight in the seating arrangements but the food is over the top good. Shrimp gamborini is italian buttery garlicy sauce extraoridaaire. Atmosphere is all walks: hostel guests, families, city hall types, contractors, software - all are welcome and feel welcome. And go home with a smile and a full belly!

Went to my first show and I couldn't get enough! Blew me away - entertaining, ad-libbing, theatrical yet musically serious and gifted bunch of fellers having more fun than a Trans-AM doing 140MPH cranking Skynyrd on a Maxell cassette. Seriously good homage to the 1970-80s range of high-school music

I stumbled into a small bar in the Lower East Side, NYC, last fall and was completely mesmerized by Cubeta and the Liars Club. He channels Springsteen, Counting Crows, Dave Matthews but in a unique crisp driving sound. I've told everyone I know to check him out. If only I lived in NY I'd be a veteran of dozens of shows.
The Fillmore may be more storied as far as SF venues go, but for my money there's no better spot than the Warfield. Varied seating and standing spots make this a versatile venue, with historic operatic architecture moldings, and posters in the lobby. Balcony, tables, or 15 ft from your favorite performer - not a bad seat in this house.
Elvis stood steady spitting out his unique vocal stylings with a platitude of sameness. Went thru the motions, played some good ballads where you could actually sense his skills, that is when the bassist didn't ruin them with his high school band backup vocals. Crowd was stiff, and Elvis was his taciturn self - no audience interaction and no love from this attendee... he's a great studio musician and thats where I'll get my Elvis fix from here on. Out.
Very cool stone architecture. Cant wait for the Jazz awards coming up soon!
about the only way to secure a seat is to buy the dinner option. Food is marginal, but hey, its a club. Otherwise your standing in a mass of bodies craning your neck to see the show I've found.
Acoustics are decent, but nowhere near the Independent a similar sized venue that has invested in a space that produces quality sound. All in all, its about the talent they book and you can't fault Slims in that department one bit. They attract a wide range of artists. All in all Slims is a true San Francisco establishment for all to experience.

In a party atmosphere with snacks, drinks, families. Excellent source of unique presents for the holidays - years past I have found oil paintings and even commissions a family portrait by a metal sculptor, Amy Blackstone who works out at the Hunters Point Shipyard collective. I can sum it up in one word: go! ... You wont be disappointed

This mural depicting native california plants and buterflies really brigthens what was formerly a drab gray wall in Noe Valley at the corner of Church and 22nd St. It's beatuiful. Thank you Mona!
The instructors are fantastic, warm people who love what they do. Their enthusiasm is infectious! They are very encouraging while also appropriately safe and very knowledgable about their wind sports. If you've been considering trying kiteboarding, or windsurfing this is a great outfit in an ideal location.
