JC Fandango's is hidden in this strip club in Garden Grove, but man...when you walk through the entrance on an evening of salsa and merengue, the place is off the hook! Better than the salsa places in LA! Seriously, it's got an incredible vibe -- like you're at a night club in Miami or something! It oozes energy and seduction at the same time...and the people on the dance floor can MOVE! Get ready to shake dat ass!
Mmm...just thinking about them make my mouth water, the only problem is that they might give you a heart attack, but indulging in them once in a blue moon won't hurt! :)
I prefer Disneyland over any amusement park in Southern California, but Knott's Berry Farm is a MUCH cheaper alternative. The park itself needs a little revamping -- the rides are much faster and edgier than Disneyland, but it needs more character, other than Camp Snoopy. The Knotts Restaurant is pretty good, though. My mom loves going there for the biscuits and signature jams.
Outdoor concerts are always nice and refreshing, but dealing with the parking and that Hollywood traffic just completely cancels out any sort of enjoyment that you'd experience at the Hollywood Bowl. The venue itself is fine. They just need to fix the infrastructure of the Hollywood area (which will never happen - oh well, wishful thinking...)
My high school prom was at the Disneyland Hotel. It wasn't nearly as magical as I had hoped - ha! The hotel is rather old and could use some renovation, but then again, I was there in '96 -- gawd, that was a long time ago, so I'm sure they've revamped it a bit. If not, they definitely need to!
The Sephora store is a girl's dream...you can walk in and try on all different kinds of expensive makeup. Ok, you may have to consider the hygiene aspect, but overall, it's pretty cool to just play around with different color palettes and scents. Fun stuff! :)
My cousin got married at the Newport Beach Marriott last year and I thought it was a very nice location -- her ceremony was held outdoors in the garden area, which was a nice backdrop for a summer wedding. The reception was held indoors in one of their grand ballrooms, which was elegant and spacious. They also had these cool flat panel screens in front of the entrance, which listed the names of the couple getting married -- I thought it was a nice, hi-tech touch!
Oh, and I don't want to forget to mention that there are dishes full of delicious Italian candies for guests and visitors to take! I'm a little greedy and I always take a handful! ;) ha!
I got married at The Grand Newport Plaza last April and it was the perfect place - I wouldn't change a thing. Well, I would change one thing. Although the venue is about 3 miles from the beach, it would've been a dream come true if it sat right on the beach. But heck, everything else was absolute bliss -- from the wedding coordinators (who were on top of EVERYTHING!), to the beautiful Spanish style courtyard with dual staircases and fountains (where the ceremony was held), to the elegant ballroom (where the dinner reception took place). The staff was friendly, accommodating, and genuine. They certainly deserve 5 stars and if I could give more -- I WOULD!
The Museum of Glass looks really neat from the exterior -- the architecture is definitely eye-catching and unique. The museum itself is really small in size, but they make good use of the space. I was disappointed that there wasn't more to it, but I have to admit that the BEST part of the museum was their auditorium where they featured artists demonstrating their craft. We saw a renown glass-blowing artist create something right before our eyes!
When I see the Space Needle, I instantly think of the movie, "Sleepless in Seattle" -- it's just one of those famous landmarks that I felt obligated to go to the top and check out the panoramic view. It's nice, but not really worth the expensive ticket price in my opinion...but this is coming from someone who's been to top of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Bowers Museum has evolved from being a tiny, historic Orange County exhibit with a collection of native American/Latino artifacts to a cultural center with an impressive collection of art from around the world. When I visited the museum last year, they were building a wing for a permanent Chinese exhibit. I can't wait to go check it out.
I recently discovered Pigeon Point on a drive from Santa Cruz up to Half Moon Bay. It's a nice stop off and it's got a little hostel, which would be a good overnight stay. There's nothing really around the lighthouse, but it's quiet and there's an incredible view of the Pacific Ocean. Definitely a place to stop for a photo op!
Pacific Grove is an affluent area -- lots of big houses and great beach fronts. It's rather quiet because it's a retirement community. But it's right next to Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is nice.
I have never been to such a cool place where the surfers don't have to paddle out, but can actually jump right into the break (from the Pleasure Point). Talk about saving time and energy...the breaks can be pretty huge, and the Santa Cruz surfers are pretty territorial, but if you're good at short boarding -- this spot rocks!
If you're a surfer just starting out, or enjoy long boarding, Cowell's beach can be pretty good if there is a swell. Otherwise, it can be flat as a lake.
Capitola is a nice little beach town that has these great candy colored condos that line up on the shore. It seems like a nice place for a summer getaway. The restaurants are okay, a bit expensive and always kind of rowdy with frat-type crowds. Not my cup of tea, but I can see the appeal.
I used to go to Thanh My all the time because it's open late - which is great for people who are night owls and get a late night appetite. I continuously went there until I caught one of the servers picking his nose while hovering over a bed of produce. I pretty much lost my appetite and haven't returned since. But admittedly, their imperial rolls were very good.
Carrie Underwood's long blond locks are gorgeous! I don't know how this girl has been blessed with such a lovely voice and beauty. All I can say is that she is one lucky girl. The angels have been looking down upon her!
I think Gwyneth Paltrow is a better than average actress. She's made some good movies, but I hate how the media puts her on this pedestal. W Magazine hailed her as being a "goddess" -- honestly, I don't see anything "god-like" about her. Highly overrated.
I wouldn't go to the Geisha House to eat...I mean, it's way more of a bar scene. So, unless you're interested in buying severely overpriced Japanese food or are starving from waiting in the long ass line to get into the place -- I would highly recommend going somewhere on Sawtelle or even in J-town if you're looking for authentic Japanese.
The Ahmanson Theater is a popular place to see operas, musicals, plays, and performing arts. It's older (although not historic...my guess is that it was built in the 70's), but it still has a classic feel to it. I remember seeing the Phantom of the Opera there when I was a child and it was such an exciting to have that "theater experience" -- and I enjoyed it immensely. It was a great introduction to the arts in Los Angeles.
I tried Bi-rite this evening based on a recommendation from a friend. I ordered an "Almond Joy" sundae and it was soooooooo delicious -- despite the generous helping, I wanted another one instantly after I scraped every last bit out of the carton bowl! The roasted almonds and coconut were an excellent combination with the vanilla bean ice cream and hot fudge! Whenever I'm back in the Castro, I'm definitely heading over there -- I could eat that sundae for breakfast, lunch or dinner!!! Not only do they have sundaes, but ice cream cones, ice cream sandwiches, cookies, and other sweet treats! Yuuuummmmmm!!!!
Can be hit or miss -- you could hysterically laugh your ass off one night or sit there with an occasional chuckle on another. Generally, I think comedy clubs are pretty entertaining -- and when you see a comic live, it's way more funny than if you were watching them on tv. The venue is not bad...it can get pretty crowded, so you might want to arrive early so that you can guarantee yourself a good seat...
The Mann's Chinese Theater is still significant because of its pivotal role in Hollywood history. You can find the hand/footprints of famed movie stars and celebrities. It's fun to put your hands and feet where the stars once were. But it could stand a bit of renovation or repainting at the very least!
The Walt Disney Concert Hall building is an incredible sight in itself! People from all over the world look at the edifice as a work of art. The surfaces are reflective as the sun rays shine and glow. I've been on the inside as well, but I have to say that the exterior is even more impressive! It definitely adds a distinctive character to downtown LA!
Pastaria can get really busy and a really overcrowded -- that's why reservations are HIGHLY recommended. But it's probably the most reasonable place in downtown Los Gatos to get a very tasty meal. The decor is cute and the restaurant feels warm because it's so lively. Plus, it's within walking distance of my apartment, which I love for its convenience! Oh, and for the boys -- it's right across the street from the Silicon Valley Aston Martin-Bentley dealership (which actually has a Bugatti Veyron in the showroom right now!)
Today was the first time I've ever tried Barton's Bagels. I ordered a toasted tomato basil bagel with lite lox cream cheese and it was SO yummy...the yummiest bagel I've ever had! Plus, it was super cheap -- just over 2 bux! I'm craving another right at this moment...too bad I live so far away from San Anselmo! :(
I like this place because of the cool movies you can see that aren't featured at all the other mainstream movie theaters. It's refreshing!
I attended an entrepreneurial workshop for small businesses when I first moved to the area and thought it was a good learning experience. The workshop was short, so it was simple an introduction of the basics. The instructor was knowledgeable and the workshop was interactive. I'd attend another one if I had the time.
I recently organized a party at B Street & Vine for roughly 30 people and I couldn't have picked a better place to accommodate my guests. B Street & Vine is located on the main strip in downtown San Mateo, which is a very central location with parking easily accessible (the structure is right next door!).
When you walk into the restaurant, it feels warm and intimate. The vibrant, yellow painted walls exhibit works from local Bay Area artists, which adds to B Street & Vine's artsy flavor.
The restaurant features a wine bar (with an incredible selection of wine). There are tables where lunch and dinner is served, and even an heated patio if you care to dine al fresco.
The food that was prepared for our party was flavorful and delicious -- appetizers: cheese & charcuterie platters, paninis, and all kinds of different bruschettas to sample!
The co-owners, Steve and Mark, were attentive and exceptionally helpful, as was our server, Efren.
I would return to this place in a heartbeat and can't wait to take my husband! I think it'd be also notable to mention that all of the party guests gushed about how cool B Street & Vine was!!! I'm sure they'll all be back very soon!
My husband loved Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. I, on the other hand, adored him in the movies "The Fountain" - incredibly emotional acting! and "The Prestige." Hugh Jackman is one of those guys that is both adorably cute, handsome, and sexy all at the same time. I am in awe...
Ok, the first time I saw Viggo in a movie was in "The Lord of the Rings" series. I liked his ruggedness, but didn't think that his acting was terribly remarkable (although he played his role very convincingly). It wasn't until I watched "Eastern Promises" that I became awe-struck by his work. The guy can act. Better yet, he can act as a Russian mobster. His accent and demeanor was depicted perfectly. He was nominated for an Academy Award, which I think was well-deserved! I look forward to seeing more of him on the silver screen!
I like to eat at In-N-Out because everything seems very fresh! The burgers are succulent...and they're so cheap! :) Try ordering your burger "animal style" - no, not "doggie style!" Animal style is prepared differently from what's listed on the menu, but you'll be pleasantly surprised! I guarantee it! :)
The Shops is a good alternative to South Coast Plaza. It's like a mini SCP, which can be nice because it's less hoity toity. SCP has become quite the scene for affluent OC women.
I like shopping at Nordstrom South Coast Plaza because the store is huge! It has a really big section for Brass Plum, which is nice because it suits my price range. The clothes are meant for juniors, but I find a lot of cute, trendy stuff that works very well with my wardrobe and can be dressed up to look more professional too. The shoe section is also amazing...I could get lost in there for hours and hours!
I like sitting outdoors where this restaurant has set up cabanas surrounded by banana trees! They also have heat lamps, which make the experience much more comfortable. Javier's has a resort feel, which is relaxing. The food is pretty good, but a little pricey. But you have to remember that you're paying for the ambiance, bar scene, and people watching...I think it's a little meat-marketish, but a fun place to hang out with friends.
If you want to grab something to eat before a movie (or after), go to Johnny Rockets. Usually doesn't have the long lines like Cheesecake and PF Changs. You're in and out!
You get what you want and you're happy with what you get because it's the same as it always is. The service can vary, but my experiences at CPK have always been better than average. The only thing is that they don't serve Coca-Cola - just Pepsi, and I'm not a Pepsi fan at all.
Obviously, if you're looking for authentic Japanese food, you shouldn't be at the Irvine Spectrum. But it's nice to know that while shopping, you can stop by and get shabu shabu and sushi! Maki Maki is a big restaurant and has a bar, shabu shabu area, and table/booth seating. It gets crowded on weekends, but I think they have weekday happy hour sushi specials, which are a steal! :)
Although this is clearly the hot spot of OC nightlife for teens, Irvine Spectrum become so overgrown from (perhaps what was originally planned was not intended to be of this scale), that the businesses are disorganized and the parking doesn't support the complex. You have to walk (or take a shuttle) a far distance to get from your parking spot to the destination. I remember when the Spectrum theater opened over 10 years ago...it was a humongous stand alone theater with kiosk vendors and now it's a megaplex mini city. This suburban sprawl style of land development just boggles my mind!
Wow, Bella Terra has been an amazing replacement of the dingy, rundown Huntington Center Mall that used to reside off the 405 freeway in Huntington Beach. It was depressing and it's surprising how long that beat down shopping center stayed open. Bella Terra has revamped HB's image in a very good way. It's a lucrative place for businesses, restaurants, and entertainment. Go check it out! Just a warning, it gets very busy on the weekend...just like Irvine Spectrum!
Levende Lounge has really cool ambience - dimly lit with candles and artsy decor. I particularly enjoyed the music spun by the featured DJs while we ate delicious tapas and sipped wine. The post-dinner dessert wines were decadent. Levende Lounge is an awesome place to chill with friends - either have dinner there, or come in for a drink. It's my favorite hangout joint in the Mission.
If you're looking for a restaurant for a hearty meal, but quick, easy and cheap -- try Bakers Square in Los Gatos, which is just off Hwy 9 or 17. The crowd was mostly seniors and families with young kids. I didn't try the pie because I was stuffed after my shrimp dinner, but the restaurant is supposedly famous for their pies. I wonder how they compare to Marie Callendar's?
The Twisted Balloon Company has a team of friendly, outgoing, artistic balloon designers that can seriously create anything that you request! Want a Disney character? They can create it! An ice cream sundae? No problem! A bracelet with a lady bug on top! Sure! Given the time, they can make formations at a phenomenal scale. Check out their website! Their skills are amazing!
This place is a major tourist trap. It has a really cool view of the bay and Alcatraz, but the Ghirardelli ice cream shop is way over-priced and is usually crowded with long lines of people shuttling from the cash register to their tables.
I've heard a lot of good things about The Slanted Door, so I was very much looking forward to having lunch there with a friend this past weekend. Mistake #1 -- make a reservation. The place was packed! They actually said that they didn't even accept walk-ins, but could seat people at the bar. I wasn't too keen about sitting at the bar since it was a bit overcrowded, but then the host said that there would be a table opening and that he wasn't ordinarily allowed to seat people, but would make an exception. Uh, okay -- 20 minutes later, we were seated at the very back of the restaurant at a dining table with 2 other couples -- it was a very odd set-up and initially kind of uncomfortable. The service was a little slow, but I guess understandable because of the lunch time rush hour. The food, however, was VERY VERY good! Super tasty, flavorful and healthy seeming. I'd like to go there for dinner, which seems especially romantic because of the illuminated Bay Bridge by night. The restaurant is a bit pricey, so prepare to open your wallet. Lunch for the two of us was $64.
Horton Hears A Who! opens tomorrow in theaters and if you've seen the previews, you can clearly tell that the visuals are uniquely innovative and strikingly realistic. The artists (modelers, animators, technical designers) who contributed to the film are exceptionally talented. Although the story may not be as laudable as the visuals, the artistry entailed in recreating Dr. Seuss' Jungle of Nool and Whoville fully compensate. Well done!
I don't know why this place always has a huge line out the door. Granted, the diner is fairly small in size, but on weekends...people are lined up! Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes, but it seems like very average fare. I wouldn't go back, especially with a wait like that! :(
I went to Dio Deka the other night to meet a friend up for just dessert. Boy, what a decadent experience that was! Dio Deka has an exquisite menu of fine Mediterranean food. Prepare to spend a lot of money because we ordered 3 desserts and spent about $50 for the two of us! I am wondering how much dinner would've been. It was surprisingly busy for a late Thursday night -- and the restaurant was crowded (mostly with 40-somethings, but that's probably due to the nature of the Los Gatos community). There is also a bar that's a part of the restaurant - could be the local pick up scene for LG. I enjoyed the desserts -- the baklava was tasty, although it didn't have enough crispy phyllo dough -- too many nuts, but the presentation was beautiful! Overall, I think it's a very high-end, good quality restaurant...perfect for a special occasion! :)
If Central Park didn't exist, I think that Manhattan would be far too drab...like in those futuristic movies where there is no life. Central Park is lush in the spring time - green and snowy with pink cherry blossoms drifting in the wind. Children, dogs, and friends play frisbee, baseball, ride bikes, roller skate, row boats, and sunbathe on a sunny day. Street performers and magicians entertain spectators. Central Park probably the most expensive real estate property in the world...amazing that they've reserved it for public use!
With Oakley, it's all about image. Clearly when you enter the building (see the entrance on the image above), it's not an ordinary corporate office. It's a place where the designers and engineers concoct their mad science. It's actually really cool to see it in person. The lobby is very impressive with its post-apocalyptic themes - think Mad Max meets Blade Runner. The design of the building and products are innovative and sometimes rather outrageous...but never mundane.
I remember when White Lotus opened up and it was seriously THE hot spot of Hollywood. I had never been to a club where the women were decked out to the 9's like J. Lo. Seriously, the outfits were tastefully revealing and the tie-up stilettos were amazing! Everywhere I looked, I saw eye candy. I went there recently, and of course, it's lost the same vibe, but it's still a pretty cool place to chill with friends and enjoy good Asian cuisine.
I wish that there were more restaurants that feature entertainment while you eat! This is a great place to see Flamenco dancers and guitarists. I lived in Spain, so I just don't see the same passion during their performances, but it's still pretty cool to see and experience a bit of culture while still remaining in Southern California.
I ordered some sort of lobster dish and it was so chewy, it was like eating bubblegum. Not the best experience. It was actually really disappointing. But the waiter was super nice about it and allowed me to return it in exchange for something else. I can't recall what dish it was (apparently, it wasn't very memorable), so I'd have to say that I wouldn't return to this restaurant. It has a nice location, however, and it seems like a nice place to go on a date if you're looking to swoon a girl -- maybe you can just load up on expensive cocktails because the cocktails were very nice! :)
Cafe R&D has a very very simple and limited menu. Despite the brevity, they do have some very tasty offerings. My personal favorites are the tuna tartare appetizer (but it's damn pricey $18...eesh!) and the cheeseburger (can't remember how much it cost, but it's comparable to ordering 5 burgers at In-n-Out!) I like the ambiance - it has a nice bar, booth seating, and rounder tables with high-back chairs. It's unfortunate that they no longer feature live jazz because that's what the initial appeal was for me. But, I still enjoy going there, especially after a long day of shopping!
Roy's is located in Fashion Island, which should already be a strong indication of the clientele...affluent and self-entitled types. The restaurant can get very crowded, so reservations are highly recommended. Although it's a bit of a scene, the food is absolutely delicious -- fresh, tender fish cooked to perfection. I usually go there on special occasions because it's pretty pricey, but it's without a doubt, a great place to satisfy a craving for sumptuous seafood! 5 stars it is! :)
I like the location of Rusty Pelican and perhaps 10 years ago, it was a cool place to go for happy hour and dine, but it seems a bit outdated to me (decor-wise...then again, it was opened in 1972 - it could stand for a bit of renovation). The staff is friendly and the food is tasty, but it's a little pricey. I'd rather eat somewhere like Roy's at Fashion Island, but Rusty Pelican is waterfront!
Trader Joe's is a fantastic supermarket that has a small town feel. The workers are really nice and friendly, the selection of foods is diverse (good ethnic variety), and it's nice for convenient, quick cooking! It's perfect for the working household!
I love Steve Carell because he looks so normal. Not Hollywood glam, which is inspiring because it's like - wow! this forty-something year old guy who looks like a total Dad achieved an incredible amount of success at a really late age! I love it because it's really untypical!
The pivotal moment in his career was when he starred in "40-Year Old Virgin" -- who could ever forget that chest waxing scene?! Yikes! He recently played the voice of the Mayor in "Horton Hears a Who!" and in my opinion, does a far better job than Jim Carrey! He's so animated and funny! It must be tough being a voice of those characters, but he pulls it off flawlessly! :)
Jim Carrey is one of those actor/comedians that's not afraid to test the limits and just act completely out of control. I remember the first time I saw him in "In Living Color" and thought he was absolutely hilarious! His Fire Marshall Bill act was hysterical and memorable. Since then, he's become a huge star! I just saw the NYC premiere of "Horton Hears a Who!" and he did an incredible job as the voice of Horton...expressive, clever, witty, and overall -- entertaining! I like the diversity of his roles.
The OC Swap Meet is HUGE! There are rows and rows of vendors selling all sorts of things. Unfortunately, it doesn't really have that old, vintage flea market feel. It's mostly new items, people selling their products -- lots of infomercial type stuff. But it's a bustling marketplace!
The Performing Arts Center features a diverse selection of great performing artists, broadway shows, operas, symphony orchestra, and singers. It's a great alternative for experiencing art and culture if you're not willing to trek to LA. The venue is quite elegant and is located conveniently across from South Coast Plaza where you can take advantage of the shopping center's free parking! ;)
Krispy Kreme donuts are my weakness...I'll roll up to the drive thru and get a box and eat at least 2! I'll save the rest and then heat them up in the microwave the next morning. Oh, it makes my mouth water thinking about the way the sugar just melts in my mouth!
Krispy Kreme on City Drive is quick - especially when it comes to the drive thru. The staff is always friendly, which keeps me coming back! :)
Interactive food is the best -- like Korean BBQ where you grill your own food at your table or fondue where you dip your own veggies in cheese?! Shabu Shabu is the same -- swirl your beef in a boiling pot of water, dip it in ponzu sauce and eat it with a bit of rice -- voila! It's delicious! Kojis is a fun place to try it, but keep in mind that it's not authentic Japanese. It's nice to see that the Spectrum has a diverse dining selection, though! :)
Yummmm...makes my mouth water! :)
This place is really cool because they play music videos and show soft/artsy porn (sometimes) while you bowl. It's definitely not your standard bowling alley with the old geisers at your side. It's more like a late night scene for 20-somethings. Has a great bar and pool tables.
Dave & Buster's is a cool place to hang out if you're looking for something to do late at night. They have a bar, restaurant, video game area, and pool tables. They check id at the door, so if you're under 21...sorry, you can't get in unless you're supervised by an adult (25 or older).
I just watched the NYC premiere of "Horton Hears a Who!" at the Ziegfield theater and was impressed by the elegant decor. It's definitely well-kept with crown-molding, crystal chandeliers, and fine red velvet curtains. The bathrooms were really cool because each stall had its own mirror and sink with gilded faucets! This is definitely not your ordinary movie theater!
Farmer's Market takes place on Sunday mornings in downtown Los Gatos. It's even open when it rains! In the spring and summertime, it's exceptionally lively with kids and dogs playing the square. Fresh fruit, vegetable, and local bakers, foodies, florists, and artisans set up tents with tasty things to eat and admire. The only thing is that it can get a little pricey...but it's nice alternative to buying standard produce at a super market! I love the small town shopping feel of it all too.
I've always admired the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. One day, a friend suggested to me that we ride our bikes from Fisherman's Wharf across the Golden Gate Bridge over to Sausalito. That sounded really exciting to actually BIKE across the bridge. I'm not a serious biker, so judging from the scope of the ride -- it looked rather daunting! But in reality, the bike ride really easy. There were a couple of hills to climb, but overall, the ride was relaxing and very very scenic! The view from the bridge is absolutely amazing! And, if you don't want to ride all the way back, you can catch the ferry! That's right, you can put your bikes on the ferry, sit down, relax, watch the sailboats, and feel the ocean breeze...it's such a refreshing experience! I highly recommend it! :)
The Golden Gate Park is a very pleasant way to enjoy a walk on a sunny day -- with your friends, family, kids, and dogs. The park is very well-kept. It's a happy place! :)
I remember going to Fountain Bowl growing up as a kid. It's an older venue, but it's still clean and the prices are reasonable. If you're looking for a hip place to hang out with your buddies, you probably want to go somewhere like Lucky Strike at The Block in Orange. Fountain Bowl usually draws the older crowds, families, and religious groups.
I remember back in the day when skiing/snowboarding was fairly affordable. No longer. Mammoth has become a super resort for the elite. Lift tickets are insanely expensive and so are accommodations! Not only that, the food at the ski resort - like McCoy station is extremely pricey! Expect to throw down for a burger! Lines can get long, too. But it's a nice resting spot -- especially if the weather is stormy...watch the snowfall with a warm cup of hot chocolate in hand...
Forever 21 is one of the most affordable (super cheap!), fashionable, versatile retail stores out there. I always wonder how they can keep their prices sooooo outrageously low. I bought a pair of stretch leggings for $7.00! At American Apparel they are $20! Sure, they're made from little hands (sweatshop style) -- which I am terribly opposed to, but so is the clothes from A/X or Bebe! Seriously, the stuff at Bebe is nearly the same exact style and the quality isn't THAT much better. The problem with Forever 21 apparel is that it's not very durable. But does it really matter? I wouldn't shop there for basics or something I would wash repeatedly, but their going-out clothes are perfect for a party!!!
I love shopping at Target...I can get every single thing I need! Kill how many birds with one stone?! From groceries to clothing...to electronics to books...doggie stuff to bathroom supplies! If there was ever an earthquake and I was forced to get stranded anywhere -- Target would be the place! The only problem with the Irvine Spectrum store is that parking can be a drag, but that's just the nature of this overgrown shopping center. Otherwise, if you're at the Spectrum to eat dinner or catch a movie, Target is a great stop along the way!
You can find some really cool clothes, shoes, or accessories at Filene's Basement -- as long as you're willing to dig! If you're looking for something in particular "quickly," I wouldn't recommend going there. But Filene's Basement stores are usually HUGE and have a plethora of items, which are marked down tremendously from the retail cost! There could definitely be a diamond in the rough!
The Guggenheim Museum's building is an incredible masterpiece by Frank Lloyd Wright. The interior space spirals around and around, giving the visitor a striking illusion and a unique way to view various works of art. I personally, have more of an appreciation for the artwork at MOMA, but the Guggenheim would be the second one on my list of places to visit while in NYC!
MOMA houses an impressive collection of works by some of the greatest artists around the world. The museum exhibits diverse art spanning from paintings, sculpture, drawings, film/media, photography, and print.
Renown artists include: Pablo Picasso, Edvard Munch, Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin, Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Georges-Pierre Seurat, Henri Matisse, Wasily Kandinsky, Gustav Klimt, Marc Chagall, and more.
Weekends are especially crowded, but a day at the MOMA is a fantastic way to spend a rainy day!
Taste is reasonably priced and in a prime location in West Hollywood, flanked by several high-end boutiques and fashionable restaurants. We were seated indoors, but on the front patio, which was warmed by heat lamps. The service was great. My sister-in-law ordered a juicy Kobe burger, which I was eying because I wasn't too thrilled with my salmon salad. The salmon was dry, but the greens were fresh and the dressing was flavorful. The tuna tartare was delicious! I'd go there again and order the burger! :)
LACMA is an awesome art museum! The cultural exhibits span from ancient to modern art from all parts of the world. LACMA houses an excellent collection of Asian art, featuring a plethora of historic relics. There's also a Japanese garden and pavilion.
LACMA has hosted public late-night parties, which are super fun with DJs, food, live music, art! It's a great place to hang out with your friends and check out the art scene!
The best part about Las Brisas restaurant is that it sits upon the cliffs overlooking the ocean in Laguna. There's an outdoor patio where cocktail drinks and appetizers are served. The menu is limited to nachos, fish tacos, ceviche (which is delicious and flavorful!), and other light dishes. But it's a splendid way to spend the afternoon/early evening and it's quite affordable to eat out on the patio. After eating, you can walk along the boardwalk and check out the waves, local artisans, and beachgoers.
The reason I didn't give Las Brisas 5 stars is because the main indoor restaurant is nothing special. The food is tasty, but rather pricey -- and it gets fairly noisy. Plus, parking can be tricky because there isn't much available on the street. But you can always valet.
es mi cancion favorita! El cantante, Juanes, es un talento raro y excepcional! Espero que tenga la oportunidad ir al "live" concierto!
I wonder if Santana would be any good at playing that game Guitar Hero?
Sure the man is the master when it comes to strumming the guitar, but did you know that he also designs shoes?!!? Yes, it's true! I saw them at Macy's and Nordstrom. High-end stuff!
Or maybe Snoop Dawg is even beyond that now. I remember when his career started burgeoning, journalists would interview him and it'd be incredibly difficult to decipher anything he said other than, "You know what I'm sayin?!" No, Snoop! What the heck are you saying?! Nowadays, besides just rapping -- which has transitioned into more R&B player style (by the way, I love his new song: "Sexual Seduction" or the uncensored version "Sexual Eruption" -- it's hilarious how these guys can get away with singing this stuff!), Snoop is now a family man coaching his son's sports teams and spending time with the family on a hit reality show. How times change...
Despite Martha Stewart's criminal history and bullying reputation, I still find this woman to be enviably talented and amazing! She can turn dirt into a gem. Don't know how she does it, but I certainly wish I had that same miraculous charm...maybe in my next life?
I saw Mary J. Blige in concert at Wango Tango (convinced to go by a teenie bopper friend) two summers ago. I have to say that she was one of the best performances (after Kanye West). Despite the fact that she is older than all of the other headlining performers, she exudes an incredible amount of passion and energy while on-stage! It was highly entertaining and inspiring.
The beat to Kanye West's music is always pretty catchy and easy to get into, but if you listen carefully to his lyrics - you'll find that they are ingenious! He refers to the most random, yet clever topics/themes -- a lot of them with interesting sociological references. He's definitely an artist that's honing his craft.
This is the only actor out there that is proud to show off his not-so-svelte physique. At first I thought it was mildy funny -- more like, "This guy is effing crazy to run around stark naked with his hairy belly hanging out...and his unsightly white ass!" But time and time again? It's like, "Dude, keep you damn clothes on!"
I'm actually pretty tired of his movies now. But I absolutely LOVE watching his old SNL skits! Those are absolutely CLASSIC and BRILLIANT!
Somehow I can't get that scene out of my head. You know the one I'm talking about...the one from Casino Royal where Daniel Craig emerges from the ocean in those teeny weeny little boy trunks -- not the speedos that make you cringe and turn away, but the shorty shorts that make your eyes widen and fixate on a certain area. Yes, you did it too. Admit it!
I think the first Eric Bana movie I saw was Black Hawk Down. I thought he was memorable and mysterious at that time, but after I watched Munich, I was hooked! I couldn't help but drool as I gawked at him for 2 hours. I hate deifying these Hollywood types, but the guy is straight-up hot. He exudes sex appeal...his dark hair, skin, scruffiness, perfectly fit body...and tight bum (which he bares in the movie)! Sure, it's objectification...but why not?!
Might I add that he is a very good actor? Not just easy on the eyes, but he actually can act.
But her acting skills are certainly lacking! As long as she doesn't say anything, it's all good! My favorite movie featuring Jessica Alba is Sin City -- the shot where she twirls around wearing those black leather chaps (that show the curvature and bareness of her perfect ass) and snaps that long whip -- man, I'm speaking from a woman's perspective...and let me tell you...it was tantalizing for even me to watch! I can't even imagine how it got guys all revved up!!!
I don't admire too many celebrities...in fact, I find them to be obnoxious and pretentious. But for some reason, I think of Natalie Portman quite differently. She's a beautiful girl -- her features are striking (even with a shaved head). Plus, she's got a good head on her shoulders. She picks quality roles to play (with perhaps the exception of Star Wars) -- and takes on each of the characters very convincingly. I recently found out that the Israeli-American actress speaks Hebrew fluently, and that was a pleasant surprise.
She's very well-educated (a Harvard grad) and doesn't oversaturate herself in the movie industry -- or rather, what I mean to say is that she keeps her profile to a minimum and isn't keen on self-exploitation like the other young stars of her generation (whose behavior I detest!) I recently heard her speak on MTVU about terrorism, which was an interesting topic and not one that a lot of young actors can speak articulately about. That was indeed impressive!
I do secretly (or not so secretly) envy those few who have both brains and beauty...and Natalie Portman is one of those exceptional cases -- which is why she is probably so successful...
I hate gushing so much about a person and putting them on a pedestal, but I'll do it just this once! ;)
I went to Coco Cabana because of a recommendation from a friend who regularly goes to Kimberly for both cut and highlights. I decided to give her a try, and she did a nice job with long layers. I wouldn't say that it's a terribly difficult hair cut, but I was satisfied and pleased that it only cost $50 (not including tip). But seriously, for Los Gatos -- that is very very reasonable! Perhaps because the town is over-saturated with hair salons?
In any case, the place was tidy. The decor is a bit cheesy, but what do you expect when the place is a hair/tanning salon. They try to give it that tropical feel, but they don't quite pull it off.
One thing to note is that the hair stylist only accepts cash or checks - no credit cards!
MAC stores can be found anywhere, typically at your local mall. But the MAC Cosmetic store on Union Street is unique because it's not like a store, it's more like a salon! The space is huge with high ceilings are tall windows. It's actually nice to have the "natural lighting" to actually see whether the colors match your skin tone. Ordinarily, you can't tell with the bright, overbearing store lighting.
The MAC salespeople are nice - most of them are made up like drag queens -- be forewarned that MAC makeup is rather heavy, but depending on the application it can look quite natural.
The MAC store on Union Street is a refreshing and non-suffocating place to shop for makeup! Go there, play with the remarkable spectrum of colors...it's an opportunity to just go wild!!!
Getting in at The Standard Hotel (Downtown) on the weekend could take you a while if you can't work the bouncer...it'll cost you a hefty cover charge too -- but once you get to the rooftop, you'll find a breathtaking 360 degree view of the city! At night, LA is all lights. It's pretty romantic, and if you're lucky - can even score a water-bed pod to just chill and share drinks. There's a bar, small dance floor and a glistening pool. The pool is reserved for those who are daring enough to shed their clothes -- those with perfect model bodies because EVERYONE will be watching!
Natural Expressions is an arts-and-crafts person's paradise. Everything is organized neatly...from beads, semi-precious gem stones, sterling silver and gold plated chain, charms, swarovski crystals, sewing magazines, fabrics, textiles, tools, and supplies. They've got everything!
The store space is open and bright. The salespeople are friendly and unimposing. It's a good environment to take your time to peruse the entire store -- no pressure to buy anything at all!
Natural Expressions also offers several different classes - quilting, wire wrapping, etc. They have a workshop booth where they instruct semi-private/group lessons.
The only thing is that the supplies can get expensive, and if you don't carefully monitor all the stuff you accumulate in your basket, you will certainly shell out a lot from your pocketbook. They've got a lot of the same stuff that you can find at Michael's or Joanne's (although the quality of some of their inventory is much higher end). The difference is the shopper's experience and the wonderful boutique-like, personalized feeling.
Some things are done purely because of convenience. Most would consider me to be a frugal person, while I say that I am just exceptionally price-conscious.
Los Gatos Cleaners is within walking distance from my apartment, which is an exceptional plus. It's about 3-4 blocks away from the Downtown strip, so it's in a good location. But I swear, charging $6.75 to dry clean a pair of cotton pants seems really unreasonable. I pay $1.95 for any item at Sands Cleaners in San Jose.
The quality of Los Gatos Cleaners' cleaning is good -- I cannot argue with that. But getting things cleaned here on a regular basis will make you go broke!
This is an emergency-only dry cleaning solution for me. Otherwise, I'm getting in my car and driving a few miles to save my hard earned dollars!!!
I was looking for a local cobbler nearby my workplace and dropped by Victor's Shoe Repair on Monday -- it was closed! Went to another one down the street...which was also closed, which leads me to believe that people in this business choose to rest on Monday so they can stay open on Saturday. Ok, I suppose that's fair.
I returned the following day (Tuesday) to find Victor (the owner) with a bright, welcoming smile! He asked me, "What do you need Madamoiselle?!" I had a belt that needed an alteration, a handbag strap that needed reattachment, and a pair of boots that needed to be resoled. He said everything would be ready on Thursday (in only 2 days)! Great timing...and perfect for my trip down to LA. His prices weren't unreasonable - not expensive, but not cheap. The only thing was that I wasn't able to negotiate down the charges, even though I was certain that I could get away with it! Needless to say, his gregarious personality was worth it, and I happily returned today to pick up my belongings.
The stitching jobs on both the belt and handbag strap were straight and even. The boot heels were replaced and the boots polished! Just like new...and rather than having to throw out any of those things, I spent a total of $28!
Thanks Victor, I'll be back very soon...
When you go to YMCA, you're there because you're looking for a good place to workout or socialize - definitely NOT a meat market or a scene, which is perfect for me! The facility has 2 floors of everything you'd want: machines, weights, studio (for yoga, spin, pilates, and other classes), daycare center, indoor pool and hot tub...they also provide warm, clean towels at the entrance!
The staff has always been very cordial and helpful. The one reason why I keep going to the Peninsula Family YMCA in San Mateo is because of Susan's Fusion Flexible Strength Power Yoga class. Susan, the instructor, is phenomenal. I've taken yoga at various studios up and down the California coast and had seriously low expectations for a gym class (little alone at a YMCA). But this woman, who happens to be a tri-athelete, has an amazing way of motivating her students with her sharp wit and unique sense of humor. She makes the hour pass by so quickly, even though she's kicking our asses! She works us good, but I absolutely adore her!!!
If you're looking for a fancy spa with luxurious amenities, this is the wrong place to go...try Equinox or Club One. But if you're looking for a place where you can exercise without being harassed by some hunky beefcake, the Y is certainly the place!
It boggles my mind that a restaurant like this can even survive in downtown Los Gatos. Jasmine Chinese Restaurant is in dire need of a massive interior design overhaul. But before we can even talk about aesthetics, let's talk about the food and service. Some Chinese restaurants are "dives" -- and understandably so. You go to a Chinese restaurant that may be dingy and you don't expect the food to be any good because you're in Chinatown, Monterey Park, or Cupertino. Historically, the service at Chinese restaurants isn't good -- either is the cleanliness. But that's because the food is authentic, delicious, and/or CHEAP!
My perception of Los Gatos dining is premium quality and service. Classy, is how I describe nearly all of the restaurants on the strip (with only a few exceptions). But Jasmine Chinese Restaurant doesn't share any of these adjectives. Nor is the food any good. I am shocked that they claim on their website that: "Jasmine Chinese Cuisine brings the best Chinese food in the South Bay." HA! What a joke! Their food was AWFUL. It was Americanized and not even the good Americanized like PF Changs (or Panda Express for that matter). Yes, the place was terrible...and the waitresses were sad-looking, unmotivated (why should they be?), dreary dressed 40-year old Chinese ladies.
The worst part of it all was when the bill came and two unwrapped fortune cookies sat on top of the carbon copy check laid on an old plastic tray. Uh, YUCK!!! Can we say "unsanitary!?!?!?" How many people put cash, germy hands and god knows what else on top of that dirty tray...and they want to serve us bare fortune cookies? I think not.
My husband and I left the restaurant in disbelief. As we walked out, I couldn't help but notice the restaurant awards that they had received. Clearly, they were outdated because the most recent one was from about 12 years ago!
This place needs to be shut down!!!
True, Los Gatos is well-known for its affluent community...and Santa Cruz Avenue is lined with lots of swanky specialty boutiques - but Bella Rosa Boutique surpasses them all! In terms of fashion, Bella Rosa is by far the hippest, trendiest, and coolest clothing store (or rather, "boutique") on the strip. In a way, it's almost out of place being in Los Gatos because it doesn't really match LG's demographic. Instead, it reminds me of the boutiques on Robertson Blvd. in West L.A.
But I'm not going to complain because the fashion is right up my alley. The good thing is that it's in my neighborhood, so it's somewhere that I frequently like to go -- just to window shop. Admittedly, I've never purchased anything there (Maybe if the startup that I work at goes public...wishful thinking, perhaps!??!)!
The store is indeed a girl's Candyland. The intriguing window displays lure you in with vibrant and unique designs straight out of the latest fashion magazines. Of course, these beautiful creations don't come without a cost and if you're shopping at Bella Rosa, prepare to throw down! A t-shirt will run you about $80-100! But I guess if you compare it to LA boutiques, the prices aren't too over the top...they're just more than I'm accustomed to.
I give it an A+ for presentation and alluring decor. I just wish it were more affordable to look fabulous! :)
Perhaps it's a given that this place isn't super authentic since it is a franchise restaurant. But judging from the selections on the menu (and the prices), I would've thought that the food would be tastier and more refined. I've been to Left Bank three times now (you wonder why I keep returning) at three different locations, and I keep trying different dishes - hoping that I'll change my mind. Despite the rave reviews from my friends, I just don't agree that this is a great restaurant.
During our last visit, our server was pretty hysterical. His pronunciation of his attempt to speak French was painful. Clearly, he was not hired for his linguistic skills! Although he had a rough start - making a broad announcement to five tables that "the bread is on it's way!" - uh, ok -- He actually did entertain us with his liberal and dramatic drink pouring techniques.
It's a decent place, but definitely not all that it's cracked up to be...especially for the price.
Say goodbye to those bushy caterpillars that hover over your eyes! Ziba's stylists are threading wizards that shape and sculpt your brows to perfection.
Threading is an Indian tradition that's growing in popularity in the US. Despite the demand, it's hard to find a salon of this caliber (I've discovered that many threading artists do this out of their own homes or video shops - seriously!).
All of Ziba's stylists are carefully trained in the "Art of Threading" (yes, there's a school for it!) I haven't had one bad experience at Ziba...not one!
Although all of the artists are good, my favorite Ziba girl is Mumta! First, she studied my face and then went at it with her single piece of thread, giving me the perfect arch to compliment my face shape! It's an amazing craft that takes only a few minutes. Threading is far less painful than getting your eyebrows waxed (and it's supposed to be healthier for hair growth - no ingrown hairs!) Plus, it's way cheaper - Only $10 (but don't forget to include tip too!)
I love this place so much that even after I moved to the Bay Area (I'm still looking for a good place to go -- any suggestions out there?), I get my eyebrows done EVERY single time I visit Orange County! That's how loyal I am! Crazy...yes!!!
*My one recommendation and irritation (thus the 4.5 stars) with this place is that it gets really crowded so the wait can get a bit annoying...even though it's well worth it! I suggest going right when the salon opens!
Whenever I head to the Huntington Beach pier, I get nostalgic because it's the place where I grew up...I'd skip to the end of the long runway, look down at dark waters and wonder what it'd be like to dive off the deep end!
The Huntington Beach Pier is a historical landmark that was originally built in 1904, and was destroyed and reconstructed three times due to torrential storms and violent weather. The HB pier that stands today was erected in 1998, which is made to withstand storms, waves, and even earthquakes.
The HB Pier often gets crowded with visitors, beach goers, fishermen, artists, vendors, local musicians, and teens during the summer time. But, it's the perfect place to get a bird's eye view of the brave surfers that whip around the sharp waves that crash against the cement pillars of the pier.
On a clear day, you can see a spectacular view of Catalina Island, Long Beach Harbor, and LA County.
It's a great place to go for a stroll and enjoy the day at the beach with your family and friends -- if you're lucky you might even catch a glimpse of a dolphin or sea lion!
*A word of caution, it's always chilly and breezy at the pier, even if it looks warm and clear outside -- I highly recommend taking a sweater or jacket!
