This seems like a good start for this seemingly new production company. They seem to have a decent grasp on the mechanics of doing an animated film, and had enough of their own style to set them apart from the massive companies like Disney and Pixar. Was it 'as good as'? Naw, a good start, I'm sure these guys will refine their technique and come up with something great.
It's a kids' movie, but with a confusing level of adult references.
The movie was one facepalm after another. So many tongue in cheek jokes, sight gags, and homages to other films you could hear the audience just say "awe god..." repeatedly. But if you were a kid you wouldn't get the joke. Which is where the movie loses a lot of it's charm. If you didn't have the references the movie was a bland cliché 'zero-to-hero' film.
Again though. It's nice to see something outside the massive cartoon farms.
It's not going to be what you'd expect. The movie is wierd, it wanders around skirting the edge of reality all the way through. You don't know how much of it is true, or if any of it is, but there's enough to keep you wondering the entire time. Told in a very believable narrative of a man in as much disbelief as the audience. It really grounds the story, and brings an intelligence to the main character(the narrator) who would otherwise look like a complete moron for continuing on his adventure.
It's one of those "The movie in and of itself is the punchline" movies; everything that happens self-validates the film as a whole.
Could wait for it to come on TV, but you'd really miss out on laughing with your friends. It will really put you and whoever you're with in that hope filled inspired feeling.
I swear this is one of those weird "Had to be there" moments where I was talking with my friends about the movie and the thing that kept popping into my head was:
"You know what this reminds me of? that old "Astro Boy" cartoon from like the 60's."
...what a coincidence huh?
The quality of the film is barely better than what you see on your average TV cartoon show these days. But I couldn't help but notice there was a black sheep in the animator's department. 99% Of the movie followed a particular style, except for a few things, usually pertaining to ultra destructive weapons. You could tell there was one guy that drew things a little differently. Not saying it was bad, but certain things really stood out. Like seeing surgical power tools, bone saws, and such in the isle of your local stuffed animal shop. There was just a bit of disconnect here and there.
Sure, take the kids to see it, I'm sure most will get a kick out of it. And NO, none of the old racist stereotypes were cast in this film.
