“The highest attainable standard of health has not been realized by the majority of people on the planet – life expectancy in the 38 poorest countries is 49 years, almost the same as that in the U.S. in 1900.”
“3 billion people, almost half of the world’s population, earn less than $2 a day and 1.2 billion earn less than $1 a day.”
“SARS spread to 38 countries in 3 months – we are all connected – health problems and diseases do not respect national borders.”
“There are at least 925 million people… Show more living with food insecurity and hunger in the world.”
Because there is a lack of and a need for awareness of global health issues at Ryerson University, this initiative was started in hopes that this Global Health Con ference will act as a forum for students, faculty, and key players in the global health field to come together to share, inspire, and empower each other. The conference will focus on three general areas: international aid, international development, and international health. The goal of the conference is to inform and spread awareness of global health issues such as regional, national and/or international factors influ encing health, policies, and programs that address these factors, access to health care, and medical humanitarianism in war and social crisis. We also want to recog nize how political and economic corruption, injustice and various social determi nants of health in less-fortunate countries impact the well-being, safety and health of the population, especially those who are marginalized.
