Many of us can relate to this quote. Democracy in this country often doesn’t seem to work for us. Are there ways to re-engage the democratic process so that everyone has a voice?
Democracy Talks is a new form of public engagement that brings citizens together to discuss common problems and propose solutions. A session at Utsc hosted by the Scsu and the… Show more Pssa (Political Science Students Association) will give students a non-partisan forum to share their concerns in small groups and propose solutions that will be submitted to appropriate levels of government for consideration.
This event will be facilitated by a well-trained policy committee.
Why Democracy Talks Works:
It is community based : Democracy Talks reaches people who are not engaged in our democracy.
The activity reinforces the message : Instead of participants being told that their voice (or vote) matters, they learn that their voice matters because in the program their voice is heard and respected.
It is based on the interest of participants : The issues discussed are chosen based on the priorities of the participants.
Presented by trusted and respected facilitators : Samara partners with and trains community-based staff members, who understand the local culture and often have well-established relationships with participants.
Finally, it is both fun and meaningful : In addition to engaging in conversation, Democracy Talks participants may have an opportunity to plan an action to bring change to their community.
