This workshop will be made up of two consecutive Fridays: November 14th & 21st.
Prominent thinkers on leadership (Daniel Goleman, Sylvia Ann Hewlett, Erica Ariel Fox, etc.) are in agreement about the need for greater presence and awareness among leaders in today’s complex and demanding workplace. In fact, Goleman states: “The first task of management has nothing to do with leading others; step one poses the challenge of knowing and managing oneself.”
To achieve excellence in their work, many leaders… Show more are turning to mindfulness to strengthen their capacity to respond to the unexpected, to be more present with staff and other stakeholders; to deal effectively with the many demands on their time and energy; to achieve greater self-awareness, focus, and creativity; and ultimately, to achieve better results for themselves and their organizations.
Mindfulness has been described by Jon Kabat-Zinn as “the art of observing your physical, emotional and mental experiences in real time with deliberate, open and curious attention.” It means the mind is fully engaged in what you’re working on, the person you’re talking to, the surroundings you’re moving through. As Maria Popova puts it “You’re present for the moment, for others, for the mission, and for the task at hand.”
In this hands-on, experiential workshop – exclusively for senior leaders in not-for-profit organizations and government agencies – you will learn mindfulness meditation and practices that will enable you to become a more effective leader – for your staff, for your board of directors, for your other stakeholders, and for yourself. It will be held on two consecutive Fridays: November 14th and November 21st, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
You’ll find this workshop:
Relevant to your work : Because participants will all be senior leaders of not-for-profit organizations and government agencies, the issues and situations used to illustrate and work through the practices will be real and relevant. Participants will also be able to suggest potential issues and situations as the focus of our sessions.
Practical and hands-on : Each day will involve experimenting with meditations and practices so you can determine which will be best for you, and which you will want to share within your organization. Meditation practices and journaling homework will be assigned in between the two Fridays to help you experiment and reflect on what you’re learning.
Transformative : We’ll alternate between exploring excellence in leadership, practicing meditation and other mindfulness exercises, and sharing experiences. By the end of the second Friday, you’ll have designed a personal mindfulness practice plan that will help you to become a more mindful person and a more effective leader.
A light breakfast, lunch and snacks, a journal and materials/resources will be provided.
