"Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome ... to cabaret!" Recent years have witnessed a resurgence of this delightful art form. The word "cabaret" evokes images… Show more of Paris' Moulin Rouge and Folies Bergère, Isherwood's fictitious Kit Kat Klub, and the jazz rooms of New York City. But what exactly is cabaret, where did it all begin, and where is it today? Join Adi Braun for an exclusive journey into the heart and history of cabaret, from its origins in France at the Chat Noir in 1881; to the dawning of Kabarett in Germany in 1901; to its heyday during the Weimar era and its eventual decline when the Nazis came to power; and the continuing influence of cabaret on live entertainment in America throughout the 20th century and up to the present day. Topics covered will include the social and political significance of cabaret throughout its history; key composers, lyricists, and performers, such as Rosa Valetti, Erika Mann, Edith Piaf, Karl Valentin, Josephine Baker, Gypsy Rose Lee, Max Raabe, and RuPaul; the distinction between the German art form of "Kabarett," the French art form of "cabaret," and the North American genre of "jazz cabaret"; and related art forms such as vaudeville theatre and burlesque.
