In late 2011, three New England commercial fishermen alerted physical oceanographers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute of unusually high surface water temperatures and strong currents on the outer continental shelf of southern New England. Oceanographers investigated and found that the Gulf Stream had temporarily shifted well north of its normal path and ocean water masses were found to be unusually warm and salty.
