The Art of Grafting
Grafting involves a sharp knife and the mindset of a surgeonbut don't let that intimidate you! Budwood from one cultivar is either attached or inserted into the growth tissue of a similar fruiting tree. The resulting branch structure growing from beyond that graft point will now be the desired cultivar. Rootstock can be bench grafted in late winter with a whip-and-tongue union for planting out in nursery beds in early spring.
