From Sargon to Suetonius: The Development of Writing in the Ancient World

Ancient writings shed light not only on the day-to-day lives of people in antiquity, but also on what they thought was important enough to record. Since the clay tablets and monuments found in the kingdom of Sargon in Mesopotamia, documentation in various forms of writing has given us insight into the historical and social development of the West. We will investigate the recording… Show more of everything from business records, religious documents and poetic ideals to political polemics in the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, the ancient Near Eastern kingdoms, Greece and Rome. The interplay of methods of writing as well as the subjects being recorded will be examined. (History or Literature & Writing)
Note:

No class 11/22. Limited parking is available within University Village. Additional parking is in the adjacent lot, located at the corner of Club Drive and 22nd Street (across from Dillard's in University Mall), a 5 to 10 minute walk to your classroom.
Instructor

Carl Schott, PhD European History, University of Notre Dame, has published two books of poetry, Not Like Chocolate and Not Here, Not Now. He served as a military intelligence officer and taught at Heidelberg University. His most recent book, Mission to Saint Petersburg, is based on original research in 19th century diplomatic correspondence and memoirs.
