Alex G. Spanos Center

In its second decade of operation, the Alex G. Spanos Center owns a reputation as one of the Big West's finest playing facilities and one of the best on the West Coast. It is located to the south of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Memorial Stadium on the university's west end. The facility was funded by private donations and monies raised by community volunteers comprising the Spanos Center Steering Committee. Ground was broken on the site in August, 1979, and the complex was used for the first time on September 9, 1981. The Spanos Center is home to the Tiger volleyball and basketball teams, and also serves the community as the site of numerous other sporting events, concerts, and cultural and community functions.

Built at a cost of more than $7 million, the building seats 6,150 spectators. Three thousand of the seats feature chairbacks while the remainder are bleacher-style. The building has the capacity to expand to 8,000 with minimum alterations. The roof is supported by glue-laminated beams, the longest of which spans 248 feet. The arena has four main entrances which open onto the concourse 20 feet above the playing surface. Included in the complex are team rooms, referee quarters, and area for two cross courts. A locker facility is located adjacent to the southeast entrance in the Pacific Intercollegiate Athletics Center.

The complex is named after benefactor Alex G. Spanos, a Pacific graduate and Stockton-based businessman. Spanos is a former member of the University's Board of Regents and is one of the nation's largest builders of rental housing. He is also owner of the San Diego Chargers of the National Football League.
