Pure Land Buddhism cannot be understood without Amida Buddha and its Name. Bishop Umezu will discuss what it means to us today and how it relates to the basic Buddhist teachings.

Reverend Kodo Umezu was born in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. He received his B.A. from Ryukoku University in Kyoto in 1973, and his M.A. from the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley in 1976. After arriving in the United States in 1973,… Show more Reverend Umezu served at the Fresno Betsuin Buddhist Temple until 1976. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1976 to 1980. He then served at the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple and Buddhist Church of Oakland before being appointed to serve as the Executive Assistant to the Bishop in 1996.

In 2005, Reverend Umezu was appointed as the Interim Director of the Center for Buddhist Education at the Jodo Shinshu Center in Berkeley, California, and went on to serve as Director from 2006 until 2012.

On April 1, 2012, Reverend Umezu was appointed as the 14th Bishop of the Buddhist Churches of America.
