The trouble is that a restaurant review of Onyx is misplaced. Onyx is a bar with food – probably better than average bar food. This is carried out in detail after detail. For example we were first seated at a table which was too small for all the regalia of dinner – but fine for a bar. As a party of 2 we moved to a table for 4 which was fine.

There are many elements of the décor that are nicely finished and of high quality but the décor is dominated by a wall of 24 flatscreen TV’s playing (while we were there) rock videos that could be seen throughout the restaurant. The videos were so strong that they dominated everything else.

The staff was pleasant and reasonably attentive but seemed not to be in synch with what a restaurant is. As an example we received the bread after we got our appetizers.

The food was a mixed bag. Gazpacho was good, the salad was overly bitter. Scallops wee good. The risotto I had was some sort of mélange of white rice, cheese and diced vegetables. It was bland and tasteless. It lacked the richness ristotto should have.

The wine list was limited and filled with one off vineyards. There were no comparison points. By selecting the area we got a wine which was fine but not outstanding at a reasonable price.

The valet parking worked well. It’s free (plus a tip). Take advantage of it as the parking lot can be full for the LA Fitness crowd.
