Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
Following the untimely death of a senator, fat-cat legislators recruit an innocent and staunchly principled Montana scout leader to represent his state with hopes of exploiting his naiveté to bring home pork-barrel funds. But Jefferson Smith (James Stewart) has other ideas as he mounts an epic filibuster in which his unwavering idealism will be pushed to its limits. Now regarded as an American classic, the film was quite controversial on its initial release for its cynical view of the U.S. government.
