Changing roles and increasing expectations regarding parenting and work-life balance can be challenging for fathers. There are many theories - sometimes contradictory and confusing - about how to best parent and how to nurture healthy relationships. Protect, Provide, Prepare is a course for fathers that supports fathers in parenting… Show more in today's day and age and promotes a clear and focused approach to parenting that is primarily based on paying attention to:
* The nature and quality of the father-child relationship,
* The nature and degree of stress on the developing child,
* The context and quality of the parent-parent relationship (when there is more than one parent),and...
* The degree and quality of the father's capacities for stress management and self-care.
Protect, Provide, Prepare emphasizes the importance of tending to the child's internal experience as a way of facilitating psychological maturation and advocates for a way of thinking about parenting and relationships that focuses on relational context more than on behavior. By protecting and providing in specific ways, the father can nurture the kind of environment that naturally supports the child's maturation process.
The course provides fathers with a foundation upon which to base disciplinary decisions and helps fathers meet their children's developmental needs in order to help prepare them over time for life as adults. This approach also, ideally, helps reduce the stress of parenting and provides strategies for collaborative co-parenting.
The goals of the course are to empower fathers and strengthen community. Through didactic presentation, group discussion and peer support, the objectives are for participants to develop or deepen understandings of: attachment, child development, emotional adaptation, an environmental approach to parenting and co-parenting, and collaborative relationship skills.
Facilitators Todd Sarner and Doug Silberstein are Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Parenting Consultants and fathers who have years of experience working families and dads.
