At the time of their 1990 debut, the kind of rock & roll the Black Crowes specialized in was sorely out of style. Only Guns N' Roses came close to approximating a vintage Stones-style raunch, but they were too angry and jagged to pull it off completely....
Both with his legendary bandmates and on his own, Bob Weir did a lot more than just play Spock to Jerry Garcia's Kirk in the Grateful Dead. His voice, unusual guitar technique, and compositional abilities were important to the overall vision of the Dead from the 1960s on....
In their prime, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band successfully mixed together R&B with the instrumentation of a New Orleans brass band. Featuring Kirk Joseph on sousaphone playing with the agility of an electric bassist, the group revitalized the brass band tradition, opening up the repertoire and inspiring some younger groups to imitate its boldness....
