David Nelson
David Nelson
Since the early '60s, David Nelson has enjoyed a quietly successful musical career characterized by a willingness to experiment with improvisational song structures and playing. Coming out of a varied Haight-Ashbury scene bubbling with idiosyncratic artists, Nelson's music moved from the psychedelic country-rock of the New Riders of the Purple Sage in the early '70s to his own, more free-form David Nelson Band in the '90s, all the while gaining a devoted audience if not extensive commercial success....

Great venue for live music

Slims is my favorite venue in San Francisco to see a band live. It's not too big. It's not too small. The sound system is good. The price is never too high to get in. And I've seen some pretty amazing bands here over the years, before they got so big they had to play HUGE venues to accommodate everyone who wanted to see them. If I could choose one setting to see a band I loved, it would be to see them headlining at Slims.

And PS: The Slims "Rock and Roll is not a crime" shirt is my favorite t-shirt I own! I'm just saying...

Great sound, unfriendly staff

Slim's has a great location and space -- and the sound system is very good -- but the staff has all the warmth of professional prison guards. The fun begins with being heavily frisked at the door, and continues as you are forced to buy drinks if you want to sit down. Immediately after the music stops, the staff shows their first real enthusiasm as they herd you out the door as quickly as possible. Visit this place only if you love the band.
