The Touré-Raichel Collective brings together Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré and Israeli superstar Idan Raichel to create masterworks of collaboration and improvisation. After a chance meeting at an airport in Europe, Touré and Raichel forged a deep friendship that led to an impromptu get together at a small studio in Tel Aviv with Israeli bassist Yossi Fine and Malian calabash player Souleymane Kane.
The recording session - acoustic, spontaneous and stunningly beautiful - could only be described as magic. As about.com describes, the two "play together like ballroom dancers dance with a quick anticipation of the next move, an instinctive knowledge of what the other might do next."
Their album, The Tel Aviv Session, was hailed by the media as "an intercultural freeform acoustic masterpiece" (about.com), "simply divine" (Giant Step), "deeply affecting" (The Wall Street Journal), "a cross cultural triumph" (Time Out Chicago) and "the best album this year" (Pop Matters). The recording reached the number one spot on the iTunes World Music sales charts and peaked at number 2 on the Billboard World Music Chart.
Touré and Raichel's live performances reflect the natural spontaneity and free-form creativity of that fateful recording session in Tel Aviv, allowing audiences to experience firsthand the invention of sublime and transcendent music that crosses boundaries of country, culture and tradition.
Touré Raichel Collective are putting finishing touches on their second album release due on September 30, 2014. The album, mostly recorded during a 2013 concert tour of Europe, highlights the dynamic energy of their live performances.
