The Cult of Pacifica--free lecture!

Saturday, Nov 9, 2013 10:30a to 12:00p
Treasure Island San Francisco, CA

In 1939 and 1940, Treasure Island glowed with spectacular “Pacific Deco” architecture and had its own goddess, Pacifica. This “Pageant of the Pacific” vanished as the island was transformed into a Naval Station to prepare for the Pacific war. But the theme building, Pacific House, and the “Pacific Cultures” exhibit in the Art Palace had lasting values and ideals promoting peace, culture and diversity in the Pacific area. We will explore the origins and lasting significance of the Pacific theme.
