Reb Zelmele's Courtyard: Mock Ethnography and the Soviet Jewish Imagination A presentation by Sasha Senderovich
Moyshe Kulbak was one of the leading Soviet Yiddish writers when he was arrested and executed during a wave of Stalinist repression in 1937. His interwar novel The Zelmenyaners was published this year by Yale University Press in a new translation. Professor Sasha Senderovich, who did the introduction and notes to the new edition, will discuss the novel in the context of its original serialization in 1929-1935 in the periodical press, and explore the novel's central setting — the courtyard.
