Out of Character: Decoding Chinese Calligraphy is a compelling exhibition examining Chinese calligraphy through 40 works, including 15 noted masterworks, many on public view for the first time, and all borrowed from the collection of entrepreneur Jerry Yang. It is accompanied with three abstract expressionist paintings by Brice Marden, Franz Kline, and Mark Tobey (on loan from SFMOMA), and a newly commissioned video installation by contemporary artist Xu Bing. Organized by the Asian Art Museum.
