Janowski conducts Brahms and Schumann
Two giants of the Romantic era grace the program. Schumann proudly called his overture “one of the strongest of my musical children.” His electrifying Fourth Symphony (it actually predated two of his others) was a birthday present to his young wife Clara. Brahms made the unusual concerto pairing of violin and cello partly to mend a break in his friendship with a virtuoso violinist. The instruments’ pronounced difference in sound resulted in a dramatic, Gypsy-flavored work.
