Van Zweden Conducts Brahms' Fourth Symphony
The year Haydn praised him as the greatest composer, Mozart premiered a sprightly concerto, now familiar from Amadeus. Fray and Van Zweden, said the BBC, “work together with remarkable symbiosis.” Toward the end of the 19th Century, one was either a Wagnerian or a Brahms fan; today, we can happily enjoy both giants. Brahms’s energetic Fourth Symphony is at times wistful and at others, rambunctious, but totally fulfilling.

Jaap van Zweden began his career as an orchestral violinist, but in quite spectacular fashion: he was appointed concertmaster of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in 1979 when he was a mere 19 years old! He would hold the post until 1995, when he turned mainly to conducting....
The French pianist, David Fray, began to study music when he was 4 years old. In 1995 the Conservatory of Tarbes, his native city, awarded him gold medals in piano, music theory, and chamber music....
