Alternative Theater Ensemble is an ensemble of theater artists committed to building a stronger community by creating artistic experiences that forge bonds of humanity between and among individuals, artists, and audience.

Founded on the principles of ensemble collaboration and artistic risk, AlterTheater Ensemble is committed to new works, local artists, and young- to mid-career playwrights. We seek to produce work that alters our audience, our artists, and indeed, the very molecules in the air. We embrace the community-building aspects of live theater, and the power of theater to shape a society. AlterTheater Ensemble seeks to return live theater to its roots, to bring individuals together into a community, and thereby to make live theater not just “relevant”, but an essential part of the community fabric.

AlterTheater Ensemble is committed to being a creative problem-solver for challenges in our community, and finding ways for theater to address the needs of our citizens. We wish to not just be a professional theater company, but to be a resident company of San Rafael.
