Theater on San Pedro Square

N. San Pedro St., Santa Clara St., San Jose, CA, 95173
(408) 679-2330 - Venue Website

One of downtown San Jose's most established districts, San Pedro Square has a storied past and a bright future. Once you've entered through the historic arch, you'll find yourself in downtown San Jose's 'Restaurant Row.' New restaurants stand side by side with veteran eating establishments; European-style café seating beckons. One of the most significant historic sites in downtown San Jose is right around the corner, juxtaposing with the newest in high-rise housing towers nearby.

In more recent times, downtown patrons enjoy walking, dining, and relaxing at one of San Pedro Square's abundant restaurants. In close proximity to the HP Pavilion, San Pedro Square serves as a pre- and post- game / event hangout. For 50 nights of the year, a sea of teal jerseys packs the restaurants and bars. The socializing continues each Friday from May to December when shoppers pick up their fresh fruit and veggies at the Downtown Farmers' Market.

The Tabard Theatre is tucked away, but entices performing arts fans and plans an outdoor "Shakespeare on the Square" fest for the 2008 summer season. Movie fans bring lawn chairs, munch popcorn, and enjoy outdoor classics shown on the big screen in the summertime. And for those who might want to have a cocktail, a variety of bars and pubs offer a place to meet friends and unwind.

While fruits and vegetables are the stars of the show, the farmers market is also a great place to grab lunch on the go. Baked goods, crepes made to order, hot tamales, Indian naan wraps and more are sold from stands interspersed with the farmers' stalls. (Sylvia Ulloa, Mercury News) (Full review)

Meat is the star at this faded San Pedro Square restaurant, where tapas share the menu with filet mignon and huge rib-eye steaks. (Aleta Watson, Mercury News) (Full review)

Good food, good drink, a little cramped

I was pleasantly surprised and disappointed at the same time. I went expecting a nicer, quiet dinner and found an excellent menu and great service but an experience with no more than 15 tables almost on top of one another. Don't get me wrong, you don't feel like you are eating next to someone else but this isn't quiet white table cloth dining. Come for some eclectic Spanish dining and leave satisfied!

Authentic Irish Pub Atmosphere!

An awesome and authentic Irish pub experience right down to the traditional musicians that play every Sunday and Tuesday evenings! I never miss any chance I can get to get down there to enjoy the real Irish music and a properly pulled pint! There are plenty of honest-to-goodness Irish people in the pub on the nights that they have music, including many of the musicians themselves! And if you have a chance to speak with Ray O'Flaherty Himself (he's there enjoying the vibe more often than not), you'll be treated to a genuinely affable Irish conversation!

This is the pub to go to in downtown San Jose if you're looking for an authentic Irish style experience rather than the usual cheesy pre-packaged American pseudo-Brit down-your-throat karaoke-meets-sports-bar onslaught. I like how the pub is tucked quietly into San Pedro Square, away from the throbbing discos and the loud sometimes negative late-night energy of Santa Clara street . You can very sanely avoid all of that mess by approaching from Julian Street, then tuck into the parking garage on San Pedro, go to the Old Spaghetti Factory or Peggy Sue's (or to O'Flaherty's itself) for a nice meal then saunter over to the pub for live acoustic music on Sundays and Tuesdays.

I think O'Flaherty's provides a wonderful break from "the usual" of business traveling and fast-paced bubble-headed bar-hopping. You can sit down at O'Flaherty's and have a relaxed conversation with locals or folks from out of town or just sit and watch people walk by, listen to the music or watch a bit of sports on the TV. The bar staff is extremely friendly and will pull you into pleasant conversation. It's home away from home for many business travelers, I've noticed, and you often see the same folks again the next time they're in town.

Great place to network and to dream of your next trip to Ireland!

My favorite pub...ever

I miss my O'Flats. I used to work down the street from San Pedro and everyone in the neighborhood would show up here. Everyone is so friendly and helpful that it really is a great, relaxing place to hang out before a sharks game or after a show.
