The International Latino Film Festival honors director Gregory Nava with the Mocte de Oro award as part of the 25th anniversary tribute night to his film, “El Norte.”
“The North” / “El Norte”
dir. Gregory Nava, 1983, UK / USA, 139 min.
Gregory Nava’s acclaimed debut about the harrowing journey of two Guatemalan immigrants celebrates its 25th Anniversary. It is the story of Enrique and Rosa Xuncax, brother and sister who flee their village in Guatemala and embark upon a heartbreaking journey to a fabled land of plush houses, electric lights, and flush toilets. When temptation threatens to destroy their bond, it is their spirits that prove indelible. Noted film critic Roger Ebert has said of the film, "El Norte tells their story with astonishing visual beauty, with unashamed melodrama, with anger leavened by hope. It is a “Grapes of Wrath” for our time."
