Fashion Through the Ages

Age Suitability: All Ages

This exhibit explores sartorial expression, illustrating the relationship between society and culture to fashion and clothing through the ages.

The exhibit begins in the 1400’s and ends in the early twentieth century. The books and periodicals on display document an array of fashion-related subjects; from the various constructions of garments, to the way in which clothing was advertised to the public, to the evolution of apparel through the ages. The collection of items on display tells a story wherein, for example, the clothing an individual wears is in many ways an extension of that individual’s class and occupation. Fashion and clothing, in this context, becomes more than just what we wear, rather, in many respects, it becomes an expression of who we are in a society.
