Welcome to the San Francisco Zoo, Northern California's largest zoological park and conservation center. This urban oasis, nestled against the Pacific Ocean, provides a comfortable climate all year round. We know you’ll enjoy seeing the 250 different animal species in naturalistic surroundings, and our many Zoo activities and events.
The historic San Francisco Zoo is being transformed into the New Zoo, a conservation zoo that is dedicated to the preservation of wild places and wildlife. The new conservation zoo seeks to foster respect and appreciation of wildlife and to provide enlightening and awe-inspiring experiences for all ages. You'll find a whole new entrance, a host of new visitor amenities, plus a restored carousel, beautiful artwork, and a new exhibit featuring some of the most incredible animals on earth at the Lipman Family Lemur Forest.

San Francisco Zoo is a fun place to take the kids to watch, point and laugh at majestic animals in captivity. The monkeys are always funny, and you can see a number of different animals not available in other parts of the city.
However, I don't recommend taunting the tigers. As friendly and cuddly as they may seem, tigers won't hesitate to jump over a fence and eat you. After you're eaten by a tiger, zoo personnel are required by law to kill the tiger, so it's kind of a lose-lose situation.

The front have of the zoo is newly remodeled with a spectacular African exhibit, primate area, and kids zoo. The collection of animals rivals San Diego with active rhinos, crocodiles, penguins and more. Unfortunately, the remodeling is half complete so the rear of the park feels like a Zoo from the fifties with too much concrete and old buildings with cages. Don't get me wrong, they are making wonderful improvements and the SF Zoo is worth a trip with the kids, just prepare for some disappointing features.
