"Under the leadership of Artistic Director Chris Smith and Managing Director David Gluck, Magic provides numerous programs, in addition to its mainstage season, to support new works in varying stages of development. With generous support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Magic Theatre has created The Sloan Initiative a three-year project that will commission, develop, and produce 25 new plays exploring the worlds of science and technology. With support from the James Irvine, the Ayrshire, and Columbia Foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts, Magic is a leader of The New Plays Initiative, a three-year consortium project that is commissioning and developing 15 new plays. The Martha Heasley Cox Raw Play Series offers staged readings of new plays, grouped thematically and presented at venues throughout San Francisco, including the Exploratorium and the Commonwealth Club. The Young California Writers Project is a mentoring program that sends professional playwrights into public high schools in San Francisco and Oakland to conduct artistic residencies with culturally diverse groups of young people. Magic Theatre houses a very active Literary Committee and hosts the developmental reading series Z/Magic Mondays, featuring cold readings of works-in-progress by local playwrights.
Magic Theatre is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) arts organization, supported by ticket revenue, grants from local and national agencies, as well as hundreds of individual and corporate donors."
