A seminal figure since anchoring Ornette Coleman’s revolutionary 1950s quartet, bassist Haden fomented his own revolution onon his debut album as a leader, the 1969 anti-war session Liberation Music Orchestra.
The new generation of advanced improvisers assembled for the fourth LMO album, Not In Our Name, continues the group’s partnership with ingenious arranger Carla Bley, who appears tonight. Inspired by Spanish Civil War songs, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra emerged in 1969 in protest to the Vietnam War. The group has reconvened as times demand: struggles in Central America, apartheid and, more recently, the Iraq war.
