Annual 3 day music festival specializing in roots music of all kind. Five stages around the Speedway Meadows area of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and completely FREE.

We are an annual three day music festival specializing in roots music of all kind. We have five stages around the Speedway Meadows area of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and the festival is absolutely free to the public. You have read this correctly -- FREE!!!!

What began as Warren Hellman’s bluegrass fantasy in 2001 as a wonderful gift to the city has now grown into one of the world’s largest and most anticipated festivals for concert goers and musicians alike. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 8, the FREE festival in Speedway, Marx and Lindley Meadows in Golden Gate Park, will take place on Friday, October 3 – Sunday, October 5.

Starting in 2001 with 2 stages and 9 bands, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass quickly grew by leaps and bounds over the next few years. Soon 3 stages turned into 5, and everyone from Willie Nelson to Dr. Ralph Stanley to Dolly Parton has graced them. As the talent continues to impress, so do the crowds. Last year's weekend estimates were a staggering 750,000 over the three days.

Earl Scruggs is to the five-string banjo what Paganini was to the violin. After more than 20 years with the Foggy Mountain Boys, forming the most famous band in bluegrass history, Scruggs and Lester Flatt parted company in 1969 because of artistic differences, with Flatt pursuing...
Asleep at the Wheel
Asleep at the Wheel Remove performer from this event
Since the early '70s, Asleep at the Wheel has been the most important force in keeping the sound of Western swing alive. In reviving the freewheeling, eclectic sensibility of Western swing godfather Bob Wills, the Wheel earned enthusiastic critical praise throughout their lengthy...

Greg Brown
Greg Brown Remove performer from this event
With his sandpaper-coarse but sensitive baritone, Greg Brown offers keen insights into the realities and foibles of modern life tinged with a hefty dose of common sense. He is the son of an electric guitar-playing mother and a Pentecostal preacher and was raised listening to gospel...

One of the most celebrated country-folk performers of her day, singer/songwriter Iris Dement was born on January 5, 1961, in rural Paragould, AR, the youngest of 14 children. At the age of three, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel...
Hazel Dickens
Hazel Dickens Remove performer from this event
Protest and folksinger Hazel Dickens grew up the eighth of 11 children in a large, poor mining family in West Virginia, and she has since used elements of country and bluegrass to spread truth about two causes close to her heart: the plight of non-unionized mineworkers and feminism...

Bad Livers
Bad Livers Remove performer from this event
The clubs of Austin, TX, proved to be fertile ground in the 1990s for bands with eclectic musical influences, but the Bad Livers may have been the least-categorizable ensemble of all. The trio's recorded songs ran the gamut from traditional folk and bluegrass to blues, early rock...

Mike Farris
Mike Farris Remove performer from this event
With a gospel-fueled voice that sounds like a cross between the hard rock blast of Bon Scott and the joyful sweetness of Al Green, Mike Farris has taken a long time to balance his life and considerable talent.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
Bonnie "Prince" Billy Remove performer from this event
After his stints performing as Palace, Palace Songs, Palace Brothers, and under his own name throughout the '90s, by the end of the decade Will Oldham seemed to finally settle on the Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker as the main outlet for his work.
Gogol Bordello
Gogol Bordello Remove performer from this event
Combining elements of punk, gypsy music, and Brecht-ian cabaret, Gogol Bordello tells the story of New York's immigrant diaspora through debauchery, humor, and surreal costumes. Leader and singer Eugene Hütz's taste in music was spun out of black market tapes of the Birthday Party...

Robert Earl Keen
Robert Earl Keen Remove performer from this event
Rockin' Texas Singer-Songwriter Robert Earl Keen's new album, "What I Really Mean," was released on May 10th, 2005. It might not be a crime to place him in the class of talented Texan songwriters such as Guy Clark or his old friend Lyle Lovett, but it might be a mistake.
