Bay Area veteran folk and blues musician Jimmy Sweetwater has truly made a name for himself as an impresario. Now in his third year as a promoter and organizer of quality and unique entertainment, his recent upcoming installment of the Sweetwater Presents series is an all ages show at Slim's nightclub featuring three local Soul, R&B, and Funk inspired groups who know how to get down- and work audiences up. Lord Loves a Working Man is a 9-piece group of musicians brought together by the love of late 60's scratched vinyl records with names such as "Stax", "Otis Redding," "Booker T," "James Carr," and "Muscle Shoals," embossed on the tattered cardboard sleeves. Far from your run-of-the-mill oldies cover band, LLAWM takes the stage armed with an arsenal of original songs and some revived obscure covers with a sound informed by the past but expressed through their own modern "garage" sensibilities. With a gritty horn section, Leslie organ, twanged telecasters, and impassioned vocals "these men pour their hearts out in songs make audience members alternately work up a sweat and hold each other very, very close." (?SF WEEKLY) The Struts are a five piece group hailing from Oakland, Ca. Their formula is simple. They play full throttle Rhythm and Blues and they rock it hard. Its fast. Its loud. When lead singer Farrah Ancell steps up to the microphone with the soul, grit, and growl of a young Etta James then you know something serious is about to go down. Consider it punk rock juke joint music that you can expect to be "raging, fire-blasting celebrations of the sheer unadorned simplicity of 50's R&B" (- SF BAY GUARDIAN) Swoop Unit is a 7 member Funk/Jazz instrumental ensemble that plays tight, groove oriented tunes with a sound informed by such influences as Tower of Power, The Blackbyrds, and The Headhunters. Boasting an all-star veteran cast of players, Swoop Unit members have all been instrumentally active in the Bay Area's Funk, Soul, and Jazz scenes for the past 15-20 years. "A hard grooving band that not only incorporates the driving rhythms of modern day funk and hip-hop, but also has jazz chops to back it up with blistering solos and original arrangements." (?
