For more than 20 years Abstract Painter Sean Starr has drawn his greatest artistic inspiration from music, and has created most of his work while painting to the music of The Smiths and Morrissey. Sean regards Morrissey as the world's greatest living poet, and has titled this show "Morrissey Ruined My Life" for the incredible impact Morrissey’s lyrics have had on his personal relationships and his creative process as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the master of words.
The cultural influence of the music of Morrissey and the Smiths is so great that recently, installation artist Phil Collins' had an exhibit at the San Francisco MOMA in tribute to the melancholic masters of pop.
On February 3rd, 2007 Sean will demonstrate the effect of Morrissey on his life by painting a massive canvas on a stage in the gallery, recreating his private studio atmosphere. A selection of Sean's favorite Smiths and Morrissey songs will be playing while he paints. Dozens of other paintings will be on display throughout the gallery, most titled after Smiths and Morrissey songs.
"Lyrical and emotionally evocative, Sean Starr's intensely realized paintings capture the viewer's interest at first sight. Starr's fluid, spontaneous style is reminiscent of Jackson Pollock's action painting, while his imaginative color choice and thick pigments recall the work of Chagall. Starr has created his own version of Abstract Expression, one that incorporates the immediacy of inspiration. His complex rendering of light and shadow adds a meditative dimension to his vivid color choices; the viewer sees a comprehensive wholeness to his canvases. His compositions recall the movement of a wild dance, in which the viewer is as free to participate as the artist himself."

Sean and Colin will be available at the show to sign copies of the release published by Editions Marie-Claude who has released a collective of Sean's projects titled "De Profundis" and have slated the release of "Cyrano" in 2007, a collection of original paintings and poetry by Sean Starr.

Sean currently lives in the mountains of Big Bear, California just outside of Los Angeles where he paints and writes his poetry and is working with other Southern California artists to open New Starr Studios in 2007 to help cultivate the career of other California artists.
