Performers at this Event
De La Soul
De La Soul Remove performer from this event
At the time of its 1989 release, De La Soul's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was hailed as the future of hip-hop. With its colorful, neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio's low-key, clever rhymes and goofy humor, the album sounded like nothing else in hip-hop....
MF Doom
MF Doom Remove performer from this event
Patterning his persona and logo after the Marvel Comics super villain Dr. Doom, the man behind MF (Metal Face) Doom's iron mask is actually Daniel Dumile, aka Zevlove X, a member of former Big Apple hip-hoppers K....
Saul Williams
Saul Williams Remove performer from this event
First establishing himself as an influential poet, and then as an award-winning screenwriter/actor, Saul Williams then went on to establish himself as an MC. His approach to MC'ing, though, wasn't exactly in line with the traditional school of hip-hop....
El-P
El-P Remove performer from this event
El-P, aka El Producto, is one of hip-hop's most obstinate and adventurous pioneers, combining a lo-fi old-school aesthetic with a progressive rock musician's inclination to push boundaries....
Daniel Higgs
Daniel Higgs Remove performer from this event
With the appearance of a heavily bearded tattooed prophet, Daniel Higgs emerged from the early-'80s hardcore punk scene as an underground icon with a near-mythological status. He sharpened his teeth in the music scene as a wild-eyed vocalist in the legendary Baltimore hardcore group Reptile House....
Bouquet
Bouquet Remove performer from this event
With their 1991 start as an acoustic two piece, Neil Shumsky (vocals/ 12 string guitar) and his friend Rachel (vocals/ guitar) went under the moniker of Bouquet as they brought on their sincere pop of minimal innocence....
Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra
Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra Remove performer from this event
New York-based Antibalas were formed in 1998 by musicians from King Changó, the Soul Providers, and the Daktaris. Influenced by Nigerian Afro-beat, American soul, and Latin dance grooves, Antibalas started playing at clubs around New York, hosting a weekend party called Africalia, giving them the opportunity to perform their particular style based on the combination of different cultures immersed in the band....

Tinariwen
Tinariwen Remove performer from this event
How do you compress a thirty-year epic into a few pages? Tinariwen, whose back-story has variously been described as the most compelling of any band (Songlines), the most rock 'n roll of them all (The Irish Times), hard-bitten (Slate....

Acclaimed New York City art rockers with a musical compound of glitchy electronic noise, soulful vocals, and lo-fi indie rock. ~ Rovi
Celebration
Celebration Remove performer from this event
Baltimore, MD's cabaret-punk trio Celebration features vocalist/percussionist Katrina Ford, multi-instrumentalist Sean Antanaitis, and drummer David Bergander. Ford and Antanaitis -- who are also husband and wife -- started out in Ann Arbor's chaotic, early-'90s noise-punk band Jaks, where Ford began to explore the formidable vocal style that would shape the sound of all of the couple's future musical projects....
Spank Rock
Spank Rock Remove performer from this event
Reflecting the party rap atmosphere of Baltimore's club scene, Spank Rock arrived as one of the best things to happen to both underground hip-hop and dirty rap, a pair of styles that rarely intermingle....
Dragons of Zynth
Dragons of Zynth Remove performer from this event
Unusual to say the least, Dragons of Zynth somehow cut and paste together a dizzying fusion of jazz, punk, dub, funk, soul, and hard rock, a sound that's been referred to as "Afrotek." The band has earned a reputation for its performances, which the band itself calls "audio-physio-psychic....
Thee Oh Sees
Thee Oh Sees Remove performer from this event
Thee Oh Sees are the latest incarnation of songwriter, singer, and guitarist John Dwyer's ever-evolving pop-folk psychedelic group. Dwyer, who hails from Providence, RI, has been active on the San Francisco indie scene since the late '90s, working with several bands, including the Coachwhips, Pink & Brown, Yikes, Up Its Alive, and Swords & Sandals, among others, and he formed OCS (which is an acronym for Orinoka Crash Suite, Orange County Sound, or whatever Dwyer decided it was on any given day) initially as a vehicle for the experimental instrumentals he was producing in his home studio....

CSS
CSS Remove performer from this event
São Paulo, Brazil's provocative, freewheeling dance-rock sextet CSS take their name from an abbreviation of "cansei de ser sexy," which is Portuguese for "tired of being sexy" (though, considering that the lead singer goes by the name Lovefoxxx, it's arguable how much that phrase actually applies to the band)....
Why?
Why? Remove performer from this event
The CCM band Why? was formed in London by 1990 by singer/guitarist Ant Parker and bassist Jeff Whiley; the latter quit the following year after recording the LP Rachel's Lovely Jumper, the first in a series of seemingly countless line-up changes to follow in the years to come....
Shabazz Palaces
Shabazz Palaces Remove performer from this event
The first hip-hop crew signed to the Sub Pop label, Shabazz Palaces is the brainchild of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, although the Digable Planets member isn’t so quick to admit it. In 2009, Shabazz Palaces released two EPs -- one self-titled, the other titled Of Light -- but Butler’s name didn’t appear on either....
