In 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. 100 years later, in 1963, with segregation and discrimination still enforced in some states, thousands participated in the March on Washington . During the same year, Dr. Margaret Taylor Burroughs, founding member of the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago, penned "What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black?"
