"The Alabama Lowers the Boom on the USS Hatteras" Brown Bag Lunch Talk
On the night of January 11, 1863, the famous and most feared of the Confederate raiders, the CSS Alabama, under the command of Captain Raphael Semmes, lured the Union warship USS Hatteras away from its position guarding a Union position off Galveston, Texas. After the Hatteras had pursued the strange ship flying British colors far enough from the rest of the enemy fleet, Semmes turned on the Hatteras and sunk her.
