Lecture on "NC Slave Voices: Was I Made For This?"

Dr. Lucinda MacKethan will introduce participants to the words, speeches, poetry, and narratives of North Carolina slaves and “free people of color.” Their stories dramatize their struggle to be free long before the Civil War finally made them American citizens. We will learn how North Carolina’s African Americans did not wait for the Emancipation Proclamation but worked both within and beyond the boundaries of NC law to attain freedom.
